You can put a period or semicolon at the end of "nuestro país" - but it DEFINITELY does not mean "in the countryside" or "in rural areas." The text is referring to the real situation, as opposed to theoretical numbers, and it could be referring to cases occurring in an urban area. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT DISTINCTION.
