referentes plásticos

español al inglés Arte/Literatura Arte, artes manuales, pintura
The text is describing an exhibition. "Referentes plásticos" comes up several times. I know the "artes plásticas" are the "plastic arts", but "plastic" (in this sense) seems to be used less in English.

"Plastic referent(s)" sounds pretty odd to me. It gets a few hits on Google, but nothing too convincing. I'm tempted to just use "artistic referents" in this case. Any other suggestions? TIA

La exposición muestra por primera vez la relación entre Dalí y Lorca a través de sus ***referentes plásticos*** y artísticos de la vanguardia europea de los años 20’ del siglo XX.

Discussion

Ross Andrew Parker (asker) Apr 30, 2009:
Conclusion Based on my investigation, I've decided to use "artistic referents". I think "referent" is a legitimate option in this case and that the meaning differs slightly from "influence". I appreciate all the suggestions and references.
patricia scott Apr 29, 2009:
referentes Personally, I think artistic includes them all - the work of painters, writers, photographers, architects - when using "plásticos" as is the case in Spanish, you refer to painters and sculptors, mainly, so you'd need to add artísticos in order to include photographers, and even architects (not normally referred to as artistas plásticos, as far as I know)
Ross Andrew Parker (asker) Apr 29, 2009:
referentes In most of the cases where this comes up, I'd be inclined to use just "referents" or "artistic referents". In the case "referentes plásticos y artísticos", this would mean collapsing the distinction (if there is one!).
patricia scott Apr 29, 2009:
referentes I think Ross is right, referentes are the different sources or art works that inspired or influenced them. I think artistic referents could work.
Ross Andrew Parker (asker) Apr 29, 2009:
more context It seems clear from the different contexts in which this is used that by "referentes" the author means the models (artists, movements) that were influencing their works. So I think "referents" is okay.

thanks for that! In that case I suggest:

"Plastic" does sound odd and has had a negative connotation in English since the 60s.

artistic influences

"Referentes" usually refers to people, not things, and this would be borne out by the continuation of the sentence, as it says they were "part of the European avant-garde in the 20s" which you would not say of pieces of art. I don't much like "referent," influences is more normal and intelligible.
