Kevin, David 都是这里我很敬重的前辈,zhoudan也是(虽然我倒是早知道TA年纪不大),我怎么也不会有那么不靠谱的想法。

不过这里的气氛是需要活跃一下。我牺牲一下就牺牲一下好了。

我也是在那次 Powwow 才识得庐山真面目。

周丹、东来和我年龄相仿,认识周丹以前,我间接看过她的译稿,知道她的水平。东来随和可亲,不计较小得失,不愧为外交官。

怎么样的做法都有市场 May 25, 2007

每个人有自己的市场价值,怎么样做都有市场。我无法照顾所有的人,因此只选择照顾得到的人配合。话说在前头,我必定赚取差价,也就是最起码的质保费用。客户都在市场上,不愿意让别人赚一手的,大可以自行开发客户,任何人一点意见都没有。

这两个星期和一家客户协调争取一家终端客户的大项目,终于谈下了好价钱,将近二十万字,十位翻译者参与,需时两个星期,每位翻译者至少拿到一千美元,高的拿到三千,每个人的工作位置不同,所以没有人由于别人拿得比自己多就不高兴。

我不会做终端客户的业务,因为那是另一个层级的业务,我只会做第二手之后的业务,第一手就让清高的人去做吧。

This is an interesting topic and I would like to contribute my two cents here.

I lately had to hire some interpreters in Beijing for my client. It was quite an experience for me. It was a simple consecutive interpretation job, which required 5 hours work per day, two days in roll. The subject was about SATA technology and wireless USB. The first two interpreters I contacted quoted me $800.00 per day per person. I initially thought they were quoting me in RMB. With verification, they made clear they meant well in USD. When I asked how such rate came up, they told me it was the standard “market rate”. With curiosity, my client and I interviewed them by phone. We were not at all impressed by their quality of interpretation, well, not for that kind of money.

Then, we interviewed another one who quoted USD $400.00 for five-hour work per day. Isn’t that something? Everyone was quoting in USD. It indeed made my calculation easier. When I checked with him about his rate, again I was told it was the “market rate”. This one also flatly refused to sign my “none-competition agreement”. The client was getting desperate when the event date was getting closer. I had to arrange an on-phone interview with him. Unfortunately, it turned out to be another disappointment. The client said he was very “spacey” in responding to their questions. Then we put all our hope on the last pair who quoted USD $200.00 per day (five-hour work per day). They passed the phone interview with flying colors and got hired instantly, and they later also provided excellent on-site service. If you ask me if I will ever contact the first two pairs of interpreters for future jobs, the answer is no. However, I will definitely try the last team again if another project comes up.

My advise to the translators and interpreters is that please think less how much other people charge, but think more how much you think you are really worth and what kind of job quality you can really offer. The quick way to figure that out is to add up all the cost of living and operation expenses of the month, then divide it by 160 hours [That is 40 hours per week x 4 weeks]. Then you will get the per hour rate, which is also your “bottom line”. Above the bottom line, anything you add will be your profit. Such profit margin should be flexible based on your workload and availability each week. In the free market such as the translation industry, you can pretty much charge any rate you want, but you really have to prove to your buyers you are worth the money you are charging, and match it with the quality that your clients expect. Your strategy is not only to get the business, but also to get the return customer. In my opinion, just quoting “the market rate” won’t cut it.

I definitely agree with you! Actually, there is no such a thing as the standard “market rate”. I am glad that they didn’t tell you that they got that standard “market rate” from the Chinese forum at ProZ.com.
