español term

hábito enólico

español al inglés Medicina Medicina (general)
Spain: medical history: "Exfumador desde hace 6 meses. No hábito enólico." Is this to be read/translated as "no alcohol abuse"? or does it mean patient does not drink at all? There are 2 KudoZ entries for "enolismo" -- one clearly implying "abuse" (alcoholism) and the other just "consumption". Opinions? Thank you.

margaret caulfield Apr 18, 2010:
Sorry... I meant to say in any type of NORMAL medical report, which this obviously is due to the "tone" of the previous comment. I have to go to sleep now (it¡s now 04.03 in the morning here), so "goodnight, sleep tight and don't let the bugs bite."
margaret caulfield Apr 18, 2010:
I fully understand, but I still would never use your answer in any type of medical report.
Carolina Brito Apr 18, 2010:
I have never received a written report from any doctor...in layman's terms or not....this is probably a report from one doctor to another....we usually respect their manner/style of writing...I am not saying you are incorrect. I am simply translating what the doctor wrote.
margaret caulfield Apr 18, 2010:
britos, "no alcohol consumption" (in inverted brackets - the way to get the exact term) has 509,000 hits on Google and "non-drinker" has 916,000. In any case, Google is not 100% correct. My main point here is the register. As I said, if this were an "official" report, perhaps you'd be right, but if it were, it would not state the part about the ex-smoker in the terms used.
Carolina Brito Apr 18, 2010:

margaret caulfield Apr 18, 2010:
Yes, britos, but this is a term that all doctors use in SPANISH for the simple term "non-drinker", "no alcohol (consumption)", i.e. "No alcohol". Going from "Exfumador desde hace 6 meses" (a street/normal language which is stated differently in a technical medical report), this is a preliminary report often given to the patient. It's not said this way in this type of report in ENGLISH.
Carolina Brito Apr 18, 2010:
margaret caulfield: I don't think the normal man on the street would understand this. It's too technical IMO, given the rest of the short context. You've actually given a technical term. For further discussion, I suggest you put your comments in the discussion section.

Brito's: fine, can we actually change the wording to a technical term? He did not use street/normal language...it was a report

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "After this lively discussion, I give you the pts because your translation preserves the ambiguity of the source text (i.e., says nothing definite one way or the other about pt's alcohol consumption -- but we know, at least, pt does not abuse it. Well done!"

(no) alcohol consumption / non-drinker

Peer comment(s):

Thank you. "enólico"'s very often used in ordinary medical preliminary reports in Spain, i.e. when you're asked if you smoke, etc. I've had many given to me lately and it's very common although "hábito" isn't used, but, as you say, not in English
