Es una metáfora, ésta es otra opción para decirlo en inglés.

Or "thrist for victory which he quenched" but I think hunger sounds better.

could be literally "the jar". The British Open winner receives a claret jug as the prize - as well as a bit of money I believe. If the tradition is similar to the one when football cup winners drink from the trophy then this may fit.

"chalice" is also common - if a little poetic. But it depends on the tone of the piece.
