I looked up the term and the definition I found was as follows: "a person who earns a living working online in various locations of their choosing (rather than a fixed business location)."

I normally work on from a desktop PC, but I also have a laptop. I'm currently back in Scotland for a family funeral, but I still have work to do, so that's where the laptop comes in handy. I can also work in airports if the flight is delayed, or if my Wi-Fi at home isn¡t working, I can go somewhe

I can also work in airports if the flight is delayed, or if my Wi-Fi at home isn¡t working, I can go somewhere else and keep working from there. So, I suppose I am a digital nomad. Woo-hoo.

Quite the contrary. I'm stuck at (the comfort of) my desk and desktop computer at home.

These days you see it more often that translation agencies (well, at least the ones with an online translation platform) pitch the idea of translators working from wherever they want. They use nice pictures of (young) translators sitting at the kitchen table in a fancy kitchen. Reality: young translators using a crappy laptop in a rented house working for peanuts.

To be honest, I don't believe you can deliver consistent quality work if you translate "wherever you want" using a laptop.

No, not any more! I was a digital nomad for a few years, flying every two weeks between Brussels (where my professional activity was) and Lisbon (where my family was). I also travelled a lot as a tourist until one day I got so tired of airports and planes that in 2015 I moved back to Portugal. Now I am very happy being… a complete sedentary hermit!

Yes, I take my laptop to our seaside home for the summer, so I can take on small jobs that I get done before anyone else is awake. And I have worked on other holidays too when the need has arisen. I'll only work for my direct clients on holiday though, and only when I'm staying for a while in the same place, so I don't miss out on anything special.

Unfortunately, I need a desk and a proper chair with back/neck support, so no nomadic working for me.

During some of my travels, I met people who would go to Asia for an extended time, dive/snorkel in the morning, and work in the afternoon. European offices open at about 3 pm Malaysian/Indonesian time, so the difference is just perfect.

I have considered it for many years and still use just a laptop, but the truth is that when I travel I simply don't want to work or there are too many distractions to do it properly, so I don't even bother. Replying to e-mails is the best I can do when away from my "office".

I agree. I used to work on a laptop that had to be small enough to fit on a drop-down train or aeroplane seat. I spent many years living that way, travelling hither and thither whilst working and dealing with the hassle of logging on to whatever wifi was available so that I could stay in touch with my clients, do research using Google, etc.

Thankfully that period of my life has ended. I now work on a wonderful big screen, in my home office. No more running around.

I am happy with the small monitor (13"), but I just cannot work at a cafe. Even worse, I moved to the sofa a few months back and that's my new place now. I can't function back at my desk anymore. How do people even adapt to different chairs, desks, lighting, noise (if any), temperature, etc.?
