Hi Everyone. This is from a Spanish hotel chain's promotional brochure. The client wants UK English. Under their diversification section it says:

Con esta estrategia se enfatiza la comunicación de XXX, con el objetivo de impulsar su notoriedad y posicionar la compañía como una cadena hotelera de prestigio internacional con un portfolio significativo de *hoteles 4 y 5 estrellas, tanto urbanos como vacacionales.*

I know what they want to say. They are comparing urban hotels to this kind of hotel for holiday makers. The question is do we have an exact term in English? Has anyone seen this before? Thanks in advance for your help.

This Wordreference definition covers both... " a place frequented for holidays or leisure activities". I don't think you can use just "resort" because "resort towns" exist too, as do "ski resorts". I assume that in the translation there is a list of the activities the hotel in question offers and if there are a few on it, I'd go with resort hotels.

Helena if I type the words in as single words I get similar results to yours, but if I type them in as word strings (between inverted commas) I get 3.98 million hits for "resort hotels" and 1.55 million for "holiday hotels".

If it's of any help. The owners of websites that are used to sell products/services usually want translations to be done taking into account the terms people type into their search engines, which personally I find can be a bit of a nuisance. "Resort hotels" gives 409,000,000 G-hits and "holiday hotels" gives 504,000,000.
I was just imagining a conversation and I don't think I've ever heard anyone saying, "We've booked our resort hotel".

one justification for "resort" is that as far as I know the closest Spanish equivalent is "enclave vacacional" https://www.google.co.uk/search?sugexp=chrome,mod=15&sourcei...

so it would be logical to refer to a hotel in an "enclave vacacional" as an "hotel vacacional".

Hi everyone. Thanks for your input it has been very helpful. So far I am leaning towards "resort" becuase in looking at the maps of where these hotels are and their facilities what I am seeing is along the lines of a resort. What's more most of them (those that are not located in cities) are seaside hotels. They are definetely not rural hotels or places where people go to "get away from it all."

Some hotels rely mainly on business trade, like reps; their main business is on weekdays, so they often often have special weekend break offers to make up the slack. Then you have hotels which cater mainly to the Holiday (vacation) market, which often have a more seasonal activity cycle. I think the former corresponds more to what the source text calls "urban", but it's just my take on it.

Rachel why not Google the hotel chain's name and try to locate a map showing the geographical distribution of its hotels? It might give you an idea of where they are physically.

Neither city nor resort. We mustn't forget about the solitary hotels that are in the middle of nowhere, where people go when they want to "switch off" and hotels that are in country towns, rather than bustling cities.

I don't think there's an exact equivalent of "resort" in Spanish so maybe they are referring to it with "vacacionales". These hotels would be different from tourist hotels because in Canaries for instance, people go on weekend breaks etc. just a matter of 50 km or so from home, and that isn't quite the same as tourism.
