left side
I would say that in this context "hurt my left side" is probably what he would put in the statement

: I think you have to say something about the chest here, to be complete.

left side of the chest
I think that 'the left side of the chest' sounds the most natural, and it is a phrase that would be used by medical professionals in their communication, as well as by a layperson describing his/her own injury. The example sentences I've included are all from medical journals or reports.
" A Korean soldier was admitted to the hospital with a blood pressure of 120/80, pulse 84, following a penetrating wound of the left side of the chest. "
" In both cases the barb penetrated the left side of the chest and caused an injury to the myocardium."
" A Korean soldier was admitted to the hospital with a blood pressure of 120/80, pulse 84, following a penetrating wound of the left side of the chest. "
" In both cases the barb penetrated the left side of the chest and caused an injury to the myocardium."
Example sentence:
" ... broke off on impact and impaled him through the left side of the chest."
"...whereas the lower third of the esophagus and the esophagogastric junction are best approached through the left side of the chest. "
