University Research Grants
Afternoon all. This is from an official announcement of grants to promote research projects between two universities (one Spanish, the other French). I’d be particularly interested in hearing how you handle “actividad” here. Going into UK English. Thanks in advance.
Context:
“PREÁMBULO
El fomento y desarrollo de la investigación es uno de los ejes fundamentales de la actividad universitaria.”

I am suggesting a direct translation, because I think it works fine, and, therefore, see no reason to complicate life or stray from the original when it's not necessary. I don't know why you don't like activity here, because it seems fine to me, and lots of UK sites (especially university ones) seem to think it's OK too. (add site:uk in Google to see examples)

one the university's core activities
A loose translation is one possibility here, as I agree that "actividad" is difficult to translate here. Let's see what other colleagues say.

central to what universities do
Promoting/Fostering and developing research is central to what universities do.
You seem to want a looser translation, and I think a UK university might well express itself in this way. (Sending you this from a UK university classroom now - must get back to my students!)

Not UK English, but it may work anyway.
Discussion
In this instance, I totally agree that literal is the way to go with it.
Cheers
PS: Is "Going into EU English" acceptable to state when asking questions, does anyone think? Hehe :)
