Torres left Big Bay on June 26th and sailed south along the west coast of Espiritu Santo realising that it was not a continental-sized landmass but just an island and not very big at that. He then steered a course to the south west across the Coral Sea till he reached 21°S. Still failing to find land, he changed course to make for Manila. He was just in time. Another day and the two ships would have hit the Great Barrier Reef. Certain shipwreck would have been their fate.
