Is this just a way of avoiding the repetition of Estados Unidos, or is it a specific reference?

It was a toss up between an addition (market) or an omission (gigante i.e. simply 'US premiere'). I also liked Laurie's idea of across the US. As for the America-North America debate, even though it's factually incorrect, in the UK if you say 'America' people will understand the US- It is common usage, which ultimately influences meaning so I don't think it is as clear cut as some are suggesting. Many thanks to all!"

It is referring to the enormous U.S. movie market. I think that you could safely say either U.S. or American.

neutral Silvia Brandon-Pérez : US, yes, American, no./I'd call it more than a bias... for me, it's a raison d'être./As an activist and writer, I now use US American, and it's used by others as well. Makes more sense, I think.

You know its a very old and tiresome debate and both are used and accepted. It's probably wisest to let our targets guide us and not impose our biases as translators. / on the other hand norteamericano would also be Mexican and Canadian, so its a mess!

Agreed, it's an irritating turn of phrase, and yes it's referring to the US. This might be a way of including something of the original. Can't say I'm very taken by it though (I've just demoted myself from medium to low on rereading!!)

across the US

When films premiere/open in the US, it's usually "across the US" -- in other words, in various venues all across the country, as it is, indeed, a BIG country ... GIGANTIC!

Silviantonia is right -- America is a continent, and the US is merely one country in the northern part of North America. Mexico is neither central nor south America. It is still North America, right down to the Guatemala border.

the giant US American market

I've added this at the suggestion of Ronnie; US American has started being used in grassroots movements throughout the US to avoid the 'American' which leaves out all the other nations of the Americas. I use it not only in translation but in my own writing. So here, for whatever it's worth, it is.
