昆曲是苏州无锡一带的文雅戏种，像我这样文革前尚未懂事的浙江人根本不知其存在。因为儿时记忆当中的戏曲只是越剧、绍兴大班、皮影和评弹。进入文革后，除了铺天盖地的样板戏，存活下来的只剩越剧，只是没有了帝王将相、才子佳人的戏，而是新编的歌颂革命英雄的题材或活学活用毛选的时代人物如《半篮花生》之类的。
文革后各式各样的老戏种重新登台，才知道地方戏曲原来是这么丰富。其实文革前浙江也有昆剧团，但我第一次看到昆曲（《十五贯》）已经是大学期间。浙江戏剧学校就在我们杭大边上。早上起来背单词一路背到黄龙洞的大多是外语系的学生。而那些清早就在山林中咿咿呀呀练嗓子的小戏精们常常让我们分心。不知什么时候，浙江昆剧团的牌子也挂在那门口了。尽管《十五贯》的剧情有点血腥，但听到这种唱腔便觉得雅而古朴。我想元曲和明代戏曲的韵味保持得最好的也应该是在昆曲里。与之相比，别的都是下里巴人。回到今日现实，昆曲可能太雅，所以再来一段浙江民歌。

The boy in the video is shooting with a Kodak Brownie.
One concept in the American tradition of design (applied art or industrial), IMHO, is that if something is good enough and simple enough for everybody to use it without much knowledge or expertise, make millions of it. The Kodak Brownies series of fool-proof cameras is a good example of this principle.

In the early days of photography, picture taking was not for everyone like it is today. The photographer needed to know his camera well, juggle with all the settings for time of exposure, how big of an opening (aperture), focus distance from camera to the object of interest and the speeds of his shutter! One thing slightly wrong or just a split of a second off, your photo would come out too dark or over exposed (blank), or blurry.
The first Brownie was just a carboard box, like a cereal box stabbed with a pin-hole into it. Because it has such a small hole (hence a tiny lens), it can always see things clear and focused no matter how close or how far the objects are. So, everybody could now pickup a camera and just point and click without learning the how and why. Because the lens is so small, it was also much cheaper to make, and if a cardboard box worked fine, a camera of a plastic body and parts would be good enough for the masses.
I think the Brownies is the mother of all types of point-and-shoot cameras to come, including today's tiny pin-hole camera on your cell-phone. I have two Brownies, a Kodak Pony which is similar to the Kodak 44B this boy is using, and an improved version of a box, the Kodak Duaflex much like the one the girl is holding.

Those who never had enough money for Evergrande are now less grumpy. Somehow, the English name of Evergrande reminds me of the characteristics of the river Rio Grande that originates in the high elevations of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and flows across the desolate rocky terrains of the American SW. By the time it enters the Mexican state of Chihuahua, it is only a small trickling creek, despite being called as a "Great River". It is supposed to empty itself into the Gulf of Mexico, but in recent years, it often went dry and hardly ever reached its destination.
The American actor, humorist and newspaper columnist Will Rogers once described the Rio Grande as "the only river I know of that is in need of irrigating."

陶冷月（1895-1985），一位早年就接触了西洋画而欲求中西结合却被巨变中的社会冷落了大半生的吴门文人画家。他是中国画家中为数不多的真正懂得西方绘画中的明暗和色彩、但又不舍得放弃国画传统理念的近代画家。童年时代和他一起学画的顏文樑、吴湖帆等后来都成了美术界的大佬，但陶冷月到晚年连个一般性的“美术家会员”都不是，这种现象对个人而言可说是命运弄人，但对社会而言却只能说是悲哀。
欲求“中西结合”，谈何容易？绘画领域如此，其它领域也大致如此。他一生的遭遇并不算例外，折射出的就是近百年来东西文化互动的大环境下绝大部分中国文人的缩影，除了那些十分幸运的、或者相当有门的。他们这群人中幸运的是顏文樑，他留法后回国创办了苏州美专，与刘海粟一样被认为是中国美术教育的先驱；有门的是吴湖帆，凭其丰富的家藏及精于鉴定的优势他一时成为江南画坛盟主。张大千很有名也很高傲，但他却佩服吴湖帆。也许张大千知道自己有名是因为能造假乱真，而吴湖帆家里收藏的全是宋元明清尚留在江南民间的真品。吴见多识广；他的爷爷就是清代著名的金石书法家吴大澂，他家几代人都是收藏家，再加上清朝垮台后皇家散佚出来的清宫藏品，和他太太陪嫁过来的著名的苏州潘氏家藏。可他家祖宗三代的巨量收藏最后在文革中被大卡车一车一车地拖走，不知去向。而同样生活在上海滩上却几乎已经被遗忘了的陶冷月至少比吴湖帆多活了近二十年。

PS 十几年前我曾经在巫峡神女峰下小旅店住过两夜，此景神似，只是峡谷没有那么窄，两边裸露的全是悬崖峭壁，溪石早就淹没了。这一江段边唯一的小旅店的位置大约就在画中最高的飞鸟的对岸，岸边标有水纹线高度近175米。所以画中两边的松树林等我去的时候大约已经变水草了。
