Circumnavigation on Penny-farthing Apr 12, 2015



Thomas Stevens was the first person to circle the globe by bicycle. He rode a large-wheeled Ordinary, also known as a penny-farthing, from April 1884 to December 1886. His itinerary accounts "DISTANCE ACTUALLY WHEELED, ABOUT 13,500 MILES".

像「棺材佬」这种让人啼笑皆非的中文刺青,在美国人身上并不少见。比如「丑」、「杀害他们全部,让神整理他们」、「狗所」、「无料」、「迅笨」、「自律乐」等让人费解的中文刺青,都被美国人刺在身上到处晃悠。他们也不知道这些中文刺青是什么意思,有的甚至是在刺的时候,师傅告诉了他们错误的意思。

一个女生在身上刺了一个字「灾」,她说,当时刺青师傅告诉她是「美丽」的意思。James在手臂上纹了「破坏不可」四个中文字,刺青的师傅告诉他是「坚不可摧」(unbreakable)的意思。

黄小姐表示,她后来常去那家披萨店吃饭,终于有一次忍不住问那个有「棺材佬」刺青的男子是否知道自己手上刺青的意思,对方称只是觉得中文刺青看上去很复杂,刺在身上感觉很酷,刺时并没有问是什么意思。他反问黄小姐,「为什么好几个中国留学生看到我身上的刺青,眼神都怪怪的?」

东百老汇18号艺术刺青的刺青师陈尧表示,不少西方人顾客身上的中文刺青都是五花八门的,一个女顾客身上刺了「白菜」两个字,但她根本不知道那两个字是什么意思。也有老外客人拿著网上翻译的中文来纹身,但这些翻译都不太准确。还有很多人的刺青内容非常不文雅,他们自己也不知道是什么意思,让人啼笑皆非。

在华裔唐天(Tian Tang,音译)的部落格上,很多人把自己及朋友身上的中文刺青上传,请他帮忙翻译或纠正。网友Angel留言,他女友身上刺了一个中文刺青「丑」,女友一直认为是「友谊」(Friendship)的意思。女生Philippa留言,她男朋友刻了一个中文刺青「无料」,他一直以为是「自由」的意思,但去海外旅游时,别人对这个刺青的反应都怪怪的。Dary留言,她姊姊将两个女儿的英文名字缩写(ESO 和 EGO)转成中文刻在脖子后面,成了两个中文字「狗所」,但他们一直都不知道这两个中文字是什么意思。- December 9, 2013
