¿Ideas?

Gracias de antemano,

JM

Debora Blake Oct 20, 2016:
Well... we at least now now what a real "OBI" is. LOL In making my suggestion, I hadn't taken into account "OBI" was heard, rather than seen in a written document. More importantly, as others have pointed out, this is not standard Spanish, so that needs to be factored in, as well.
JM González (asker) Oct 20, 2016:
I believe it's ICU in this case then, since it's an intensive care physician. Thanks a ton everyone! This was a major puzzle to me! Un abrazo a todos.
Helena Chavarria Oct 19, 2016:
Off topic but it reminds me of a student who came to my academy for about 10 years. He must have been about six years old at the time and he was writing about a 'mutusierra' (motosierra - chain saw) his father had recently bought. This person is now over 20, but at home we still call him Mutu, which obviously isn't his real name!
Charles Davis Oct 19, 2016:
Exactly, that's the point; that would explain how it might be transcribed like that by someone unfamiliar with the term, as a younger person might be.

Nowadays people usually say "está en la UCI", but thirty years ago they used to say "está en la UVI". So if the speaker is an older person they might well have said that. Old habits die hard.
Helena Chavarria Oct 19, 2016:
I agree In Catalan 'O' is often pronounced like a 'U'.

Words like 'ocell' (bird) is pronounced 'ucell'.
neilmac Oct 19, 2016:
Snap! I just posted the same thing below. If it's a transcription, it was probably UVI (oobee) they said, which sounds like OBI when uttered in a Catalan accent...
Helena Chavarria Oct 19, 2016:
In my experience Spanish natives often make more spelling mistakes than foreigners; they often mix up 'V' and 'B'.
Charles Davis Oct 19, 2016:
@Neil Depends who did the transcription. Perhaps they didn't recognise what it was and just wrote down what they thought they heard. Happens all the time.

UVI is still in common use, even though it's a bit out of date. Just google it and you'll see.
philgoddard Oct 19, 2016:
I think UVI is a strong possibility.
neilmac Oct 19, 2016:
UVI -> OBI Yes, and UVI might sound more like OBI in a Catalan accent, at least to foreign ears... But it would be unusual for them to write it down as such, no?
Helena Chavarria Oct 19, 2016:
I've only ever heard it called 'la UCI' and I'm sure many people don't know what the initials stand for.
Charles Davis Oct 19, 2016:
Or indeed "la UVI" (Unidad de Vigilancia Intensiva), which used to be the standard term for what is now more often called the UCI. I often heard it in the past (pronounced as an acronym, a word, not as initials). And it's still quite common.
Helena Chavarria Oct 19, 2016:
You say it was an interview, could it be ''UCI' es 'Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos' = Intensive Care Unit?

Debora's suggestion seems a likely solution as well... ¿ But would they do intubation in the x-ray wing? ... I have no idea :-)

NB: If it's being transcribed, it may have been "UVI" they were saying, not OBI. See the discussion comments :-)

¡Gracias neilmac! I have a hunch this is it.

OBI On-board imager

I think the wing may be the radiology wing where these machines are located.
The machine is known by its English name "OBI On-Board Imager".

The sentence does sound like it's referring to some place, and not a machine. But see my link to the Cataluña hospital where they mention the OBI in the radiology wing.

I should have suggested "On-Board Imagery", which would be the area where the OBIs are. But as others have suggested, I'm not really sure this is what they're talking about....

neutral philgoddard : It can't be this, for the reason you state.

Yes, you're right. I didn't take into account the asker was "hearing OBI" this as opposed to seeing it written out.
