portador de la muerte
español al inglés
Medicina
Medicina (general)
presentation on the management of metastatic disease

carrier of bad news
The author appears to refer in the original to how the physician feels towards the patient, and handling the disease and news related to it. In this context I believe "no ser portador de muerte" means "no ser portador de malas noticias"

not being allways a menace to society
I think it is the idea.
It is an idiomatc spanish phrase with a very large spectrum.

bearer of bad news
This is probably the most idiomatic version.
