escogencia

español al inglés Arte/Literatura Modismos / Máximas / Dichos
This is an interview with the son of Venezuelan artist Cruz-Diez, who worked closely with his father

What I am seeing on the web has to do with choice (which makes sense: escoger), but I don't understand it in this context.
Thanks
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): AllegroTrans, Juan Jacob

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

"I don't understand it in this context" What is there to not understand? Doesn't "choice of materials" make eminent sense? As Helena says, you have a few other options. Just think laterally. Many of the questions you post on here just require a tad of imagination.
Helena Chavarria Mar 28, 2023:
I immediately thought of 'choice', but you might prefer 'suitability' or 'selection'.

'design, selection and adaptation of materials'.
Juan Jacob Mar 28, 2023:
Escogencia escogencia

1. f. Am. Cen., Col., R. Dom. y Ven. escogimiento.

"Choice of materials" means deciding which ones to use.

...seem to be making blatant and, the artist admits, rather controversial political statements, in part through his choice of materials.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear that it's "escogencia de materiales".

curatorial selection

proceso de selección y organización de obras de arte o literatura para una exposición o publicación, con el objetivo de crear una experiencia cohesiva y significativa para el público
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : No, it's not the curator, it's the artist.

disagree AllegroTrans : Nothing to do with curatorship; this is about the artist's son choosing suitable materials etc. to help his father

neutral O G V : selección de materiales= materials selection, selection of materials, would work here. You can delete this wrong answer and post it :)

selectability (of materials)

Even if the Non-Pro Voters cannot get their heads around the point(s), I can see the venerable asker's quandary over a dull-thud, categoric and mindless 'choice' that IMO is 1. the wrong part of speech as 2. a prospective decision about potential materials and needs to contrast with 3. escogimiento - a substantive form I had always wondered about as the 'right choice'.

Methinks Helena C. is closer to the mark with suitability, notably an 'amenability to selection', except 'adecuación' > suitability or fitness immediately follows the word in point.

PS the first web ref. *IS* - whether laterally or tangentially - relevant to the question.
Example sentence:

This selection process can be characterised by application prerequisites, *potential materials*, physical principles, and selection.

Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : wrong part of speech? how?
