Thanks, Charles Yes, I meant to say it's for Guatemala. I did find examples of "planta eléctrica" meaning 'generator' - and of course lots more meaning 'hydroelectric plant'!

@Muriel I think it depends on which country your text comes from. If it's from Spain, I agree with Neil: "planta eléctrica" is not a normal term for a generator here. But if it's from the country in Central America that a quick Google search suggests it is, then the term has the same meaning as in Mexico, and if you do a country-specific search for "planta eléctrica" all the results, and pictures, seem to be about generators, and there doesn't seem to be support for the idea that it means electrical equipment in general in that country.

I wouldn't normally take "planta eléctrica " to mean a generator specifically. There are other terms for that, one of which is on the tip of my tongue but I don't quite recall right now...

I still think "electrical equipment" would cover generators as well as other items.

neutral Robert Carter : Here in Mexico, "planta" is much more usual for your common petrol-engine generator. "Grupo electrógeno" usually means those enormous diesel ones.

In Spain, I'd expect it to mean "plant" or "equipment". Mx is a whole 'nother planet lexically IMHO :-)

That's what it normally means, and it seems to me to fit the context of a mobile laboratory, which would presumably need its own power supply since it may or may not be possible to hook it up to a supply in place.

I think it must be. I haven't seen them called this in Spain either. But it seems to be common over there.
