inglés term

ID in the US

inglés al español Jurídico/Patentes Derecho: (general)
What would be the equivalent to the Argentine DNI [Documento Nacional de Identidad] in the US? I guess there is not such equivalence. For identification purposes, signing relevant documents, etc. what would be the first ID that is used in the States? Passport? License number?
Thanks.

Sol Jul 22, 2004:
It might even be illigal to ask for it without a good excuse, but don't quote me on that.
Sol Jul 22, 2004:
LCK Jul 22, 2004:
are you looking for English to Spanish combination?
Sol Jul 22, 2004:

driver's license

that's the first ID they ask for
Peer comment(s):

agree Xenia Wong : Yes, driver´s license.

agree Sol : Yes, and if you don't drive, then an ID card that looks just like a driver's license - the social security card is a unique NUMBER but it is NOT a picture identification card. A passport is always a choice. A student ID card might or might not do.

agree Sandy T : Yes, definitely. If you don't know how to drive (although there is people who don't) you are kind of...illiterate...:-)

agree Henry Hinds : Sol gives a good explanation also. The US has no national ID.

agree teju : this is the first thing they ask for. A lot of people never get a passport.

agree christopher bolton : i've been stopped several times while in the states and they always ask for drivers license never my passport

agree LCK : it also depends on the circumstance: if you present a check in a department store, they will ask for your driver's license, on the other hand if you are completing a form they will very rarely ask for your license. It will be used for proof of identity.

agree Mapi : for what is worth it is the same in the UK, but the are thinking of introducing an Identity Card of some sort in the not too distant future.

Suerte :)

ID Cards

Each state has it own policies on issuing ID cards.
Here is California's:
Identification (ID) cards

DMV issues ID cards to persons of any age. The ID card looks like a driver license, but is used for identification purposes only. A regular ID card is valid for six years, and a senior citizen ID card is valid for 10 years. To qualify for a senior citizen ID card, you must be age 62 or older.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Morgan Malvoso : yes, this is technically true, but since most people have a driver's license this is the normal form of ID. People don't have a driver's license and an ID card.
27 minutos
ID Cardas are now becoming more popular because not everyone drives.
neutral Sol : Very few people have State ID Cards. This would be a 2nd choice after asking for a Driver's License. They might also take a Student ID or Employee ID or Service (armed forces) ID, but it depends on the circumstances.

agree Ltemes : if someone doesn't have an driver's license they have an ID card so this is perfectly valid. I've seen them and they look pretty much the same, but they say "Identification card". I've had one myself, before I learned to drive!! :o)
