I make my own luck! Dec 27, 2015

Or so some people like to say, right?

I suppose the answer to this, um, offbeat question depends on your belief system and your worldview. If you believe fate was key in you becoming a translator, then, contrary to what The Oracle told Neo (The Matrix movie), you believe someone or something else is controling your life.

Destiny goes the same route. A bit too deterministic for my taste.

Destiny goes the same route. A bit too deterministic for my taste.

Luck seems the craziest answer, but it may be the soundest one by comparison.

Note: I can't believe I'm the first to comment on a poll.

Yes, definitely Dec 27, 2015

Like Teresa, I was in the right place at the right time more than once. I was lucky to pass a test for my first job and lucky to get hired (twice) by the organization where I worked the longest. I was lucky to get picked to translate at numerous overseas conferences. My best client found me through my website on the Internet. I've been very lucky indeed. I couldn't have asked for more.

Sorry, but everyone for themselves, but to say that is putting your own responsibility in someone elses hands and in my opinion pretty irresponsible?
Well, at least someone to blame if it goes wrong!

I have said no because if you are in the righ tplace at the right time but do not have the knowledge rquired then everything else is useless.

I fo rmyself have always worked to be where i am now, and prying to win the lottery will obviously not work either...

You think a higher power/entity other than you is responsible for your life. Yet you are the one doing the work.

Interesting question Dec 27, 2015

First we have to define luck/fate/destiny. That may take some time, and this probably isn't the right place.

Yes, Dec 27, 2015

I do feel lucky, and maybe luck partly has to do with a spiritual world.

Butterfly effect Dec 27, 2015

Somewhere a butterfly fluttered its wings and I became a translator.

Luck is all about recognising and seizing opportunities Dec 27, 2015

Friends sometimes say I'm lucky to have left the UK and ended up in sunny Fuerteventura. But it was all about grasping opportunities. My huband and I literally decided overnight to expatriate to the Netherlands. Many others agonised over the potential problems and missed out, ending up unemployed in the UK. As we left two months later with our cat, in the days of quarantine, we had no intention of returning there to live.

As we left two months later with our cat, in the days of quarantine, we had no intention of returning there to live.

Neither do I believe I was destined to be a translator. I could have stayed in the UK as a systems analyst if I'd wanted. I certainly wouldn't have been a translator there as my French was tourist level only. And now I am one, each good job I land is far from being due to luck or destiny. More like hard work.

No Dec 27, 2015

I don't believe in any destiny. I made a decision, I became a translator. It's as simple as that.

Let's get philosophical Dec 28, 2015

As far as the historical record attests, we owe it to the ancient Greeks, Romans and Chinese for the foundations of modern thought. Luck may be a silly thing in some contexts, but it has a place in a philosophical discussion.

I don't mean a dense and abstruse conversation, of course, but a good, sensible one.

I don't mean a dense and abstruse conversation, of course, but a good, sensible one.

I don't consider luck to be part of my decisions. However, our minds are only capable of observing and assessing a finite number of variables at any given time. So we can say it was luck that brought us together to our current spouse, our current job, house, country, set of circumstances, etc.

I can only guess at the polster's motives for posting this question, which is not exactly thought provoking or insightful. It's tendentious in the sense that he or she already believes that a measure of luck, destiny or fate (or none of it) plays a part in one's choosing a career. If he or she cares, we want to hear her motives and assessment.
