I've only heard the term "viva" (not "viva-voce", from which it is abbreviated) used to refer the public oral defense of a doctoral thesis.
A "viva" is "an oral examination, typically for an academic qualification". (But in my experience particiarly an examination to obtain doctorate degree.)
