mapa de pruebas

español al inglés Otros Arte, artes manuales, pintura
From a text about an Argentine artist, The two titles in italics are the names of shows:

Catedral y lejanía. Suite d’or (fig. 3) y Truenos lejanos (fig. 4) fueron elaboradas en simultáneo, como dos modos complementarios y disímiles de avanzar por un mismo mapa de pruebas.

I am seeing tons of hits for "mapa de pruebas", in games and even in google maps, but I can't get the translation
Thanks

If I were you, I would change the field. You don´t need an aviation/aerospace translator for your answer. Also, less people is getting your request

test map

From what I can gather after looking at what I presume to be the two shows by this artist that you refer to, it seems to have something do with a kind of computer graphics/virtual reality/augmented reality environment. I found a lot of references for "test map" in the context of gaming, but I still can't quite work out what it is. I assume it means the environment created for the game to be played in (when it refers to gaming, that is), but there are probably many other applications beyond gaming.

There is no user interface, except for the command line panel provided by the engine and there is no walking implementation because the test map didn’t require it. Moreover, no improvements to efficiency or memory management were made to NIUI library, due to concentrate more on functional implementation. Only one actor is allowed in the environment.

There are many instances where this term is used in relation to the game Minecraft, for example:
Resource Pack Test Map!
This is a complete 1.12 resource pack test map. Each time a new item, block, sound, particle etc. comes out I will update this map.

Map Includes 4 main sections, the first containing all blocks withing the game (plus a few entities), the second containing all items and mobs (plus boats and minecarts), the third containing particles, weather, GUI, Armour, Fireworks and Beacons, the final section contains every sound in the game and a head hall featuring 426 unique heads!

Just to be clear, the two exhibitions (by an Argentine artist whose name I am omitting for reasons of privacy, just as a precaution, but which can easily be found by Googling) in question seem to present scenes from a landscape viewed from different angles intermixed with computer graphics, rather as if you were in a virtual reality environment but viewing this landscape from different locations within it.

I don't see any reason to believe "mapa de pruebas" has any metaphorical meaning here.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I don't think it's technical terminology. // The text is about art, not IT.

Why? Have you actually looked at the shows?//No, the text is about art that contains IT; again, go and look at it.

journey of exploration

Or artistic/experimental journey, or something along those lines.
I can offer no evidence for this, but from the context I think this is a metaphor rather than a piece of IT terminology. "Journey" preserves the idea of "mapa".
