deporte del monopatín, o, de la patineta
Hi JT:-)
It's a bit longer in Spanish:-)
The above I think covers most of the Spanish speaking countries because some things have a different name in different countries.
skateboard = "monopatín", or "patineta".
skateboarding = "deporte del monopatín" or, "deporte de la patineta".
To translate your sentence:
"pretendo mejorar mis habilidades en el deporte del monopatín" [or, "de la patineta".-----"I plan to improve my skateboarding skills".
Hope this helps:-) [and don't fall off:-)))]

skateboard o patineta
At least in Argentina, a monopatín has a handle (it's very similar to a scooter, and I mean the new ones, not the old, motorcycle-type ones).
From what I see serious skateboarders use "skateboard" (hacer skateboard, practicar skateboard, mejorar en skateboard) but most kids talk about "patinetas".
Here are a couple of sites with pictures and use of the word.
