It depends on
- deadline
- how much of the job has been done when this happens

but anyway, I have the same CAT tool on another computer.. so the answer is YES

I don't use a CAT tool Sep 8, 2018

I don’t use a CAT tool and I’ve always managed to deliver my work on time (I never accept unrealistic deadlines). If a similar situation were to happen I would negotiate immediately a new deadline. I’m quite sure that my “regulars” would understand it as I’m known to deliver quite often ahead of time.

Yes Sep 8, 2018

I only use Wordfast Classic and only on a very basic level, mainly for the segmentation and TMs, but I don't totally rely on it.

I also have the same CATs on two computers (since they most of the time come with two activations anyway, yay! - and I need a notebook for travel, so I always have two computers around anyway).

But it would probably depend on what kind of breakdown it is. Online project in MemoQ? No problem... even if I haven't synchronized in a while, everything will still be in the TM and I just need to "accept" all the 101% it shows me.

But if it was an offline project, it would depend on how broken the CAT is. If I can't get at the TM because something is messed up really good, then I might not make the deadline.

But then again, I guess I can still pull the TM from the folder and convert it into any TM format I need... so I'd says in 90% of the cases, I would probably be able to finish the project in time.

(Yep, that's 3 sentences in a row starting with "but" ^^;)

Trados these days is giving me a headache because I refuses to export excel into the original format. The first time that happened, it gave me the scare of a lifetime, but in the end I just exported the TM and uploaded it into MemoQ and everything went fine in the end.

My own CAT is Wordfast Pro and I never had any problems with that, except converting files from Trados.

If it's a client's online CAT tool (as it often is) I wouldn't care, they just have to fix it.

But otherwise, it would not be the first time I deliver a little late, that happens once in a while. I don't think that is the end of the world, and my clients have never reproach me for it. (They are sometimes late too).

I only use WordFast Classic.

If it crashes in the middle of a project, depending on exactly where that "middle" is, I'll have a tough decision to make. Should I...
a) clean up the WF "junk" to use what I've done so far; or
b) start over and do it manually?

Yes because: Sep 8, 2018

Regularly I use a PC, but I have a laptop strong enough to play as a backup with the cat tool previously installed there.

Probably... Sep 8, 2018

Because, like many other, I have the same tool installed on another PC that is to hand, and I never update their CAT tools on the same day, to prevent possible updating issues.
But I also save my workfile to the cloud every time I take a break (i.e several times a day), to counter the bigger issue of the PC failing in the meantime. I sync memories and termbases once a week (using SyncToy) , so I'm never too far adrift on that front.

I have once gone back to my PC after a coffee break to find that its hard drive had chosen that very moment to give up the ghost. That's only once in 30 years, but once is enough...

That would be a really bad joke but I guess I could finish my job anyway. Except if the deadline is really close.

Probably - it depends. Sep 8, 2018

My CAT is fairly reliable, but like many others, if I could get at the TM, I could transfer it to my other computer, or in the case of a small job, it might be easier just to start again. It depends on several things, and mainly how long it is before the deadline.

One of my clients has just got to the bottom of a long-standing problem with Trados and Groupshare - so if it was one of their jobs, everything ought to be on their server too.

If the whole thing freezes just before deadline, I could be in trouble. (An early Trados version used to do just that if there were any issues Trados considered unsolved... later versions allow you to extract a target file anyway and sort issues without the CAT!)

Some of my jobs are small and there is not a lot of time to sort issues, even if the deadline is fine when everything goes smoothly.

Yes Sep 8, 2018

The CAT tool is installed on both my desktop and my laptop. If I can email the TM or the project itself (tmx) to myself, I could just continue on my laptop.

mostly Sep 8, 2018

Mostly I work with MS Word documents and prefer WFC (which works in the native Word environment), that's why I can always deliver the translation in time even if something bad happens in the middle of a project.

Not the case with most CAT tools though--especially without a shared TM/glossary, let alone cloud (online) solutions.
