se trata de un documental sobre hipopótamos que tiene un tono bastante especial, en una de las imágenes el narrador dice:
"Maybe this chap's bitten off more than he can chew"
Sé lo que significa, pero no doy con una traducción que me guste.

Yo te animaría a una versión más libre y valoraría la línea argumental de la que hablas ("como si de una banda de gangsters se tratara").
Así, si es un macho que se enfrenta a otro superior, se podría parafrasear la típica jerga del cine negro: "se equivocó de hombre/víctima", para indicar que metió la pata.
Creo que otras soluciones en esta línea podrían contribuir al tono general de la narración, aunque hay otras que también me gustan por lo que, además de una sugerencia, también reparto "agrís".
