No, not really Dec 16, 2011

I don't have a full-size tablet but I do have a mini-tablet which is also a phone, etc. It's a Dell Streak, which has a five inch screen and does everything you can do on an iPad, but has the advantage of being much more portable.

My husband also has an HTC Flyer, which is a slightly bigger version and, as of this Christmas, both our children will have cheap 7-inch tablets for e-mail, reading, playing games, watching videos, etc.

Two, as a matter of fact Dec 16, 2011

An iPad and one of those fire sale HP Touchpads.

I do sometimes use the iPad for translation, together with a Bluetooth keyboard and Wordfast Anywhere.

"No. What for?"

As an alternative to "too expensive", "not yet", or "what's that?"

an attractive toy Dec 16, 2011

Tablets are good but they have no practical use for me except entertaining. You cannot use as phone (too big) or PC (too small). So I also ask the same question: "what for?".

To me, computers are mainly for work. And I don't see how I can work on a tablet.

Gadgets don't impress everyone.... Dec 16, 2011

Totally agree with Emin & Nicole. Tablets are bizarre inventions. Too big to act as a phone and too small to act as a computer (as Emin says).

Although in fairness, the question only asks whether I have one or not, not necessarily whether I use it for translation.

In that respect, I don't have one, and (if I was stupid enough to be parted from such a large sum of money for an overgrown toy) would only get one for entertainment purposes, definitely not for anything else.

yeah, what for? Dec 16, 2011

I might get an e-book reader, but haven't found any practical use for a tablet PC so far.
As Emin said, too big to carry around (better a good smartphone) and at home I prefer my computer - bigger screen plus more functions.
I'd say it's a typical gadget that might be nice to play around with for a while but has no real use... so, if you were thinking about giving me one for christmas - don't!

and, as mentioned, what for? Smart phone (which I only use for making calls and rarely for internet) could also do the stuff?
My wife is moaning that she wants an iPad, but once again, what for except for "having one"?

The only really useful thing I would use the iPad for (or any other tablet PC) is to read my girls goodnight stories from as there are intersting e-books that have funny features in them for learning. Good old Dr. Seuss...

A big 'What for'? Dec 16, 2011

I spent a week or two struggling with setting up the iPad2 that my brother had bought for my mother to 'get her on email'. I consider myself to be moderately computer-literate (briefly a computer programmer in a former life), I am also a satisfied owner of a Blackberry, yet I've never been more baffled by a piece of kit in my life. I consider myself to be moderately computer-literate (briefly a computer programmer in a former life), I am also a satisfied owner of a Blackberry, yet I've never been more baffled by a piece of kit in my life. It took half a dozen thwarted attempts simply to set up her email account; it took longer to type on the pointless keyboard than it takes to send a text using the teeny-tiny keys on my Blackberry. Within seconds this 'design icon' had been reduced to an unattractive mess of fingerprint marks, I could go on and on. In the end I wrote it off as an oversized mobile 'phone that you can't even 'phone on. Whoops have I digressed? No, I don't own a tablet.

Sorry, just read the question: a tablet *PC*. Okay, an iPad doesn't count - or does it? What IS a tablet PC?

NO Dec 16, 2011

Apparently my grandad used a slate and chalk at school but I think we've moved on from that. I don't see the point of faux pen-like gadgets either, I much prefer a keyboard.

I may consider purchasing one when my existing "hardwears out" Dec 16, 2011

I shall watch developments with interest. I dream of switching to Apple, but my market shackles me to the servitudes of PC-windows. With a laptop and a USB modem stick and a smartphone, I'm already reasonably mobile.

Have a good day out there!

No, thank you Dec 16, 2011

In fact, I was looking for the "no, what for option?" as well. IMHO this is just another one of those totally pointless things which only serves one purpose - to boost the manufacturer's turnover.

Still deciding what to do. Dec 16, 2011

I was thinking of getting an iPad and using it as an e-reader, among other things, but a friend told me she uses her iPhone as an e-reader and likes it just fine, so I'm still thinking about all these things...we'll see.
