I have used plenty of times the filter in Kudoz for several reasons: 1. Askers who are rude; 2. Askers who post a series of questions, minutes apart, without looking in a dictionary. 3. Askers who give little or no context at all; 4. Askers who do not respond to requests for additional information. 5. Askers who leave questions open for years and years; 6. Askers who systematically close questions without grading because "answer found elsewhere" but do not say what the answer found was, etc. The... See more

My own Jul 20, 2022

I use my own filters. I know who the habitual KudoZ abusers are in my language pair and I ignore them.

More useful would be a filter for answerers. There are a few people who consistently provide incorrect answers - whether deliberately or not I couldn't say - and it would be nice to be able to prevent them from confusing other users.

Do I really mean that? Maybe.

I do so agree with this, Philip.

There is one such 'contributor', who posts his answers as reference material, in languages he doesn't even speak, and then gets defensive if anybody dares disagree with him. I mean...

And let us not forget the serial answerers aka point grabbers. They go from duplicating the asker's own tentative renditions to 'confirm' them, to offering their answers with a dot (.) as an explanation, to adding links to monolingual Google search pages as proof that what they are suggesting is the correct wording - that it merely exists, more like - in their own language (Italian, in my case).
There's an ongoing battle in one of my pairs between two colleagues who seem to be spending an inordinate amount of time on KudoZ pages to try and beat each other for those four points and a top place in the leaderboard.
Losing the will to live a bit.

Huh?! Jul 20, 2022

After this poll was posted, I received an email simply stating,

'Nobody knows the filter asker'

Well, I'd like to thank them publicly for their invaluable contribution, while urging them to familiarise with the filter-asker function. A godsend.

What's the filter asker option? Jul 20, 2022

I don't want to be notified of either new kudoz questions (https://www.proz.com/dashboard/kudoz/ ) or new jobs (https://www.proz.com/dashboard/jobs/ ).

I go to my custom proz.com home page several (dozens of?) times a day, whenever I feel like it.

I am aware I might miss the job of the century or the kudoz question that will make my profile shine at the top of charts for eons to come, but I am prepared to take that risk!

If it is a function that blocks certain askers, that might be useful. For example, there is one person in my ES-EN pair whose native language is evidently neither one nor the other, but they seem to be able to make a living claiming to be a translator. They recently posted almost the entire text/s they were translating, line by line, and the amazing thing is, people, including myself, seemed to be willing to keep helping them out.

Years ago, I tried ignoring this person, but in the end, I find it amusing and have a kind of grudging admiration for them being able to make a living from what they are doing.

It's sort of hidden away Jul 20, 2022

It's not on the main set of settings:

no filter asker option

So to get to it you have to switch to the old view and click the Go link:

The relevant direct link is:

It's just under the asker's name and picture (on a PC)

I don't use it any more because the stupid askers are normally the most entertaining.

Thanks, Samuel.

I do it through the individual offending KudoZ pages.
Below the asker's name+pic, the option is offered to flag or filter the asker by accessing the dashboard.
From there, you can then select what to do, whether flag or filter ('Add this user to my list of filtered askers'). Click again, and the system gives you the option to either confirm or cancel your choice.

I never used it... Jul 20, 2022

but I tend to ignore KudoZ these days. Just a waste of time, IMO.

Another reason for filtering Jul 20, 2022

on top of the excellent reasons listed by Teresa:
the asker doesn't even thank the answerer(s).

As if we were machines.

Regrettably, the same happens with the translator forums: people start a thread asking for help and then vanish without even a thank you to those who responded.
