I don't really use dictionaries much nowadays, I don't see the advantages in changing. Nor do I have the time to seek out and evaluate new versions.

No Jan 15, 2015

But I do sellotape them together when they fall apart

I don't use paper dictionaries anymore, and online versions tend to be updated automatically.

Like someone said, the electronic dictionaries are automatically updated.

I keep a lot of paper dictionaries only as back up, and some of them are old.

Just one Jan 15, 2015

My Oxford Russian-English dictionary is falling apart, to the point that some parts are verging on illegibility. It is my best friend, and I would feel lost without it (I probably should get out more ) If OUP bring out a new version, I will almost certainly buy it. However, most of the other sources of reference I use are online.

Yes - Paper rules! Jan 15, 2015

There is one 'must-have' for technical translators - Newton's Telecom Dictionary, in its 28th(!) edition. Just $28.93 in Amazon.

And, it's always a joy to bump into yet another of Harry Newton's personal off-the-cuff comments in what could be very terse technical descriptions. Enjoy!

Added last line

There are dictionaries and dictionaries Jan 15, 2015

Online resources may have replaced a lot of paper dictionaries but not all of them, particularly the ones that are out of print. Since these also tend to be the ones that get most usage, it's sometimes worth getting them rebound.

Sometimes Jan 15, 2015

I always buy the updates of my automotive dictionary as technology changes a lot in the car industry.

And I've just been forced to update my general German/English dictionary after an operating system upgrade as the old CD no longer runs on my new OS. Very annoying though as it was only available as a download with one licence which means that I have to buy it twice if I want to use it on my laptop as well.

My dictionaries have served me well, especially the Brandtstetter Technical Dictionaries. Any term I cannot find in them, I have several online dictionary but a mouse click away, where I can find it.

Don't want to lose my annotations! Jan 15, 2015

Not only do I primarily use online dictionaries these days, my paper Catalan-English dictionary has a wealth of annotations of terms or usages that I have discovered - with effort - over the years that I wouldn't want to lose. They're almost an artifact of my translation history by now...
