Just because I don't have a printer either. I never print the documents out

I hardly use any paper. In case I need to destroy some paper (really not often!) I throw it into the fireplace.

She's called Elbe and her favourite game is shredding paper into coin-sized pieces. So she gets to have some fun before I throw any paperwork away. I don't need to use her services often enough to subdue the excitement.

Definately! Apr 26, 2014

I do not only shred customer documents no longer needed, but also all sorts of other documents from the tax office, health insurance companies, etc. (e.g.) that I do not need.
You never know where these documents could land - fraud does not only take place in internet!!

This does not have anything to do with paranoia, it is just being cautious

A shredder would be unnecessary, as I either recycle my paper directly, or use it to start up my wood-burning fire in the winter months.

... and she adores shredding paper, in particular if I have to go out without her. She is faster and more skilled than any other shredder!

Yes, but I don't use it Apr 26, 2014

I'd wanted one for years, particular for shredding bank statements and useless bank information that came by post with my bank account number on it.

Finally got one two years ago and at that moment the bank went paper-free and I now get all statements on-line!

I also have a feline paper shredder that works very hard destroying loo rolls and shredding every single tissue in tissue boxes. We've learnt to keep tissue boxes upside down and take loo rolls off their holder an

With coin sized pieces, Elbe seems more efficient than any paper shredder! Thanks for the good laugh.
Just out of curiosity, is Albe you daughter or your pet?

I pay to have my stuff shredded Apr 26, 2014

I have very few translation-related papers to shred. Even contracts are electronic these days. But I do print out expense spreadsheets for my accountant and other tax-related stuff.

On the other hand, I've been getting rid of old diaries and correspondence. I have filled about 8 large boxes with tightly packed paper, which I take to Goodwill Industries. They charge US$ 5.00 a box, and the papers are shredded by special-needs people (using much larger machines).

It's simply not worth my time to do it myself.

A shredder is an absolute must if you are going to throw out paper with any personal information on it.
I make a point of shredding asap as this stuff builds up more quickly than you think.

Of course, you can always use it as stove or fireplace fire starters, as some of you have mentioned. But what do you once the weather starts getting warmer? Do you let it all build up by the next winter?

Yes. Apr 26, 2014

A paper shredder was among the first items I bought when I started out as a freelancer.
And I definately use it. Although my documents are safe, you never know. Thius includes not only professional documents but also everything that contains private information, including bank cards and information formerly stored on CDs or tapes.

I shred them myself Apr 26, 2014

I used to burn all unneeded papers when I had a fireplace, now I just tear them to pieces manually - a very relaxing activity as well

I tore up all my old teenage diaries manually, and ended up with blistered fingers. That was in the days when we didn't have home shredders.
