I spend at least a couple of hours in the foyer of my children's school while I wait for them to come out - a cold, draughty place but amazing for getting work done. They have internet access or I wouldn't work there. I really get a lot more done there than I do at home! Plus I get to chat to other mums and dads who may be hanging about, which fulfils my need for human contact - a big problem for freelance translators, I imagine!!! | | | neilmac España Local time: 17:32 español al inglés + ...
Not as a rule. When travelling, I usually take a laptop so that if there are any delays in flights etc I can get ahead with any work I may have in hand while waiting, rather than let the time go to waste.
Also, if my rural wifi internet connection is down, which occasionally happens, I can go to places nearby to use internet if need be, but again it isn't an everyday thing. | | | Martha Schwan Brasil Local time: 13:32 Miembro inglés al portugués + ... I COULD NEVER DO THAT | Dec 15, 2012 |
There are too much distraction. I could never work like that!!

When I had to take my son or daughter to swimming, skating, music lessons, etc. and hang around waiting for an hour.
We're talking about 15-20 years ago when there was little or no Internet and anyway, no laptop.
Everything was written by hand in one of those big diaries you get from the bank at Christmas, then copied onto the computer at home.
And before than, even on the typewriter.
This will sound like pre-history to younger colleagues .....! | | | David Wright Austria Local time: 17:32 alemán al inglés + ... If a train is a public place | Dec 15, 2012 |
then I used to a great deal when i commuted. Now I very very occasionally go dwon to the local Wirtshaus and work. | | | Thayenga Alemania Local time: 17:32 Miembro 2009 inglés al alemán + ...
Usually on trains, busses and in doctors' waiting room. I used to work a lot on airplanes, especially on long-haul flights that exceeded 8 hours.
But, honestly, I prefer working at home.

How on earth could you work in a building as beautifil as that?
Great for your peace of mind, but I can't help feel you'd be totally distracted by the aura and history of the place and couldn't get any work done.
I bet the librarians are hot, too! | | | Allison Wright (X) Portugal Local time: 16:32
In the next town about 20 minutes' drive away, there is a fabulously modern library with facilities for laptops, secure WiFi, and an excellent periodical room conveniently located in the same space as the coffee and cake bar.
Like Ty, I find the atmosphere in libraries is conducive to intense concentration and productivity.

While I am pretty much tied down at the moment to caring for my partner with MS, and therefore need to stay at home most of the time, that may well change soon as alternatives for care are worked out. Then, I will make a beeline for the library at least once a week!
I love working on trains too, but do not travel on them that often.
It is essential to one's sanity to work whilst waiting in hospital waiting rooms. Sitting and staring at things and people which provide no visual or mental stimulation at all and thinking of all the strange germs and infections which are attaching themselves to your person needs powerful distraction which I find only in translation!

Don't get me wrong, I still like the ability to just roll out of bed, grab the laptop and start working on the sofa but after about 6 months of "freelancing" I'd already tired of the isolation and repetitiveness of the same four walls and environment day in day out.

Lol @ Julian
PS. And I have the biggest distraction of all at home - the TV!

Of course, 99% of the time, people around us haven't the foggiest idea about what we do -- in the local neighborhood, I'm still "Holmes-san who `fiddles around with computers`" -- and you can say that no-one's going to know anyway. Nevertheless, it's worth thinking about and bearing in mind from a contractual point of view.
After all, how do you think your customers would react if you told them that you do their work in open, public places?
