español term

canalización de fondos

español al inglés Negocios/Finanzas Org./Desarr./Coop. Internacional Housing Microfinance
This is a timeline entry in a report on housing subsidy programs in Peru:

The sentence is "Se construye la canalización de fondos de la IFI." (IFIs are Instituciones Financieras Intermediarias)

This refers to the process of channeling funds from a government subsidy program to low-income beneficiaries. I'd like to either recast the sentence using "channel" as a verb or come up with a noun phrase that properly captures "la canalización de fondos" (but is less awkward than "the channeling of funds.") I've been considering something like "the funding pipeline," but I'm not sure that's entirely accurate.

Any ideas?

Gracias de antemano.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

@ Asker

The channeling of IFI funds is implemented/functional/done
Stephanie Ament (asker) Jul 23, 2022:
@neilmac I don't necessarily have an issue with "the channeling of funds" as an equivalent. I just don't like the abundance of passive constructions when rendered as "The channeling of IFI funds is designed." See my comment on Francois' suggestion. :)

A pipeline is a set of deals and projects* that help achieve a community's shared priority. For instance, if your shared priority focuses on housing stability, .

Thanks, all. This may have been more of a "hive mind" post than a terminology question. :) I appreciate everyone's thoughts!

Infusion Of Funds My initial reaction, also, was that Stephanie should just go with the literal interpretation. But the less literal one I offered, "infusion of funds", actually gets almost 39,000,000 hits.
neilmac Jul 23, 2022:
@Stephanie I'm puzzled about why you think "channelling of funds" seems awkward. A quick Google search for the term gets 58,100 results, so it's most definitely a thing.
philgoddard Jul 22, 2022:
I think you also have to look at "se construye".

chanelling of IFI funds

Note from asker:
Thanks for the response! I fully agree that this is the most accurate, but struggle with the rather passive construction that results from "The channeling of IFI funds is designed." I'm in touch with the author to confirm who was responsible for this design, in which case I could possibly recast to "X designs the channeling of IFI funds." Because these are timeline entries, the sentence structure needs to match that of the other entries (Subject / Verb / Object in the present tense).

the infusion of IFI funds

Into a low-income government housing program.

Something very similar is in place here in the US: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/15/us/politics/affordable-ho...
Note from asker:
Thanks, Barbara! What's confusing about the ST wording is that it states "fondos de la IFI", as if the funds originated with the intermediary. The broader context, however, suggests that the funds originate with a gov. program and are then canalizado through / por / a través de la IFA. So on the one hand, "infusion" makes complete sense. On the other, it doesn't seem to fit the broader context. (Stumped emoji :)

pass-through of funds

> pipelining of funds is close to the asker's original idea and perhaps no better than 'chanel(l)ing of funds. Pass-through may work well for US Am vs. BrE consumption.

Siphoning (off) does not appear apposite as low-income beneficiaries seem to be the intended recipients, so no diversion of funds, and 'trickle-down' or 'filter-through' connote a slow process.

Se construye is not part of the question, but consider a phrase with 'what is being set up or constructed is a ...'.

'channel(l)ing of funds'.
Example sentence:

IATE: canalización pipelining

USA: No UPARR funds may be passed through for Recovery Action Program grants.

Note from asker:
Hi Adrian. Thanks for your research! I agree that siphoning off, trickle-down, and filter-through miss the mark, and appreciate the confirmation that pipelining may be a near synonym. And yes! "se construye" is also key. I read this as akin to designed, but also like your suggestion of "set up", or perhaps "established." this would cover the implementation as well as the design that "se construye" seems to denote.
