Discussion

MollyRose Aug 1, 2017:
P.S. I didn´t want to say it earlier, but I confess that I haven´t been thrilled with just translating it that way.
MollyRose Aug 1, 2017:
definitely includes a lot Thanks, Marcelo, for your comment. Language Arts does include a lot! Usually when we see the term, though, it´s just in context of something else, mentioned along with math, science, etc. I found a lot of "Artes de Lengua" in ProZ when I searched the term. I'll look again sometime (and maybe post a question) after getting through the overwhelming back-to-school load!
Marcelo González Jul 31, 2017:
@MollyRose - posting a separate ... ...KudoZ question may lead to some interesting options and discussion, especially if you include some typical student learning objectives, if not an official course description from your school district. Obviously, language arts goes beyond what might be understood as 'lenguaje,' as it usually involves analyses and production of a variety of literary and non-literary texts, and can include presentations and end-of-semester performances/plays as well.
MollyRose Jul 31, 2017:
ELA, or Language Arts Would you guys say that this is a good way to translate into Spanish: prácticas del lenguaje? The people I work with don´t like "Artes de Lengua/Lenguajë." We've just been translating it as: Lenguaje (inglés).

(Spanish) language arts

If it refers to a Spanish language and literature course for all students (as opposed to a course for non-native speakers), this would be the U.S. equivalent.

My pleasure, Valeria.

If you google English Language Arts (ELA), you'll see clearly this is what it's called in the U.S., particularly at the elementary and middle school levels. In high school, those preparing for college would normally take literature classes.

I hope this helps!

Thanks!!!
Your piece of advice was really helpful! Thanks a lot!
Peer comment(s):

agree Thomas Ackerman, MAT : Language arts, personally, is the closest approximation to what it would be called in US schools for studying English. For schools in Spanish-speaking countries, I would also call it Spanish language and literature.

Thanks, Thomas! I think so too, as language arts (in the States) covers both language and literature. No idea what it might be called elsewhere in the English-speaking world. Thanks again

language lab

Without context I definitely wouldn't translate it as "Spanish" -- how can you tell it isn't a foreign language class? French? English? ...

It's probably a practicum or what my schools referred to as a "language lab" -- an opportunity to practice using language skills.

Would need more context to know for sure.

language practice

Before translating the term, I think you should see (if you get the chance) what the subject is really about, so as to get the most accurate translation possible. Translated literally, language practice means "practice of working with language. People who are language practitioners usually work in either translation, interpreting, text-editing, copywriting, language planning and language management, and are often fluent in at least two languages." You can find lots of books on language practice in English which means the subject exists as such, but as I said before, you should make sure that subject is the same as the one you're about to translate.
Note from asker:
Thanks for your contribution! Prácticas del lenguaje refers to Spanish Literature and Grammar (Spanish not aas a foreign language, but as part of High School syllabi). I can´t find an appropriate translation in English.
Peer comment(s):

agree neilmac : This should fit most scenarios IMHO...

(Spanish) linguistics and communications

Eso es lo que yo hacía en secundario en "prácticas de lenguaje " tenía más que nada que ver con comunicación. Pero veíamos algo de lengua también, por eso agregué lingüística.
Ahora, coincido con la colega que sugirió saber bien qué se enseña en esa materia. Después seria mas fácil encontrar el términos equivalente correcto.
Suerte!

Después de ver tu comentario, entonces optaría por "Spanish grammar and literature".
Suerte!
Note from asker:
Gracias por tu aporte. No opté por incluir LIngüística porque esta materia(prácticas del lenguaje) se basa más en Gramática (análisis sintáctico) y literatura.

(Spanish) language and literature

At school we had English Language and English Literature classes.

Some English teachers teach English language only, and some teach English literature only, but many (for example in secondary schools around the world) probably have to cover both.
