Como parte de una actividad tengo que traducir la siguiente frase
"Y SE SIEMBRAN ENTRE 140 Y 170 MIL HECTÁREAS QUE PRODUCEN ALREDEDOR DE 1.6 MILLONES DE TONELADAS "
pero la verdad no sé cómo poner "se siembra" o si mi gramática es correcta.

Yo escribí

Another source Linguee offers 'to plant' as one of the translations of "sembrar":

Sembré un frutal en mi jardín. I planted a fruit tree in my garden.

More on the subject I was surprised when I first heard gardeners using "sembrar" for shrubs and trees. Then I realized that the usage was widespread. It makes sense, in a way, because they are avoiding "plantar las plantas". In English we have no way of saying 'plant the plants' without being repetitive.

Agree with Muriel Many Spanish farmers tend to use "sembrado/siembra" when they mean planting rather than "sowing seed".

More context? It's really hard to choose an answer without knowing the surrounding context. I say 'planted' because (1) we don't know the kind of plant (it might not be a plant that's sown) or what kind of product it yields; and (2) it's a more common expression. An economist might say 'sown', but a farmer would say 'planted'.

Although ordinarily you'd use "sown" here, I'm not sure it works if no specific crop is mentioned. In any case, I think "sembrar" here isn't so much referring to the actual sowing, but instead to the growing of crops, or "cultivation" of the land. In Spanish, the word sembrar can mean more than precisely just sowing, for example, "la siembra" can mean both the act of sowing and the "cultivo" itself, i.e., the subsequent crop that grows from it. I live in a rural area where right now the rain-fed "siembra" has largely failed (the rains came too late).

En el contexto que vos describís es mejor usar el pasivo, pero no como lo tenés en tu mensaje:

100 hectares are sown with maize
The field has been sown with wheat

En tu ejemplo: Between 140,000 and 170,000 hectares are sown...

También se podría decir "are planted"

En cuanto a la segunda parte de la frase, lo tenés bien en el segundo. "...which produce around 1.6 million tons". El primero está equivocado.

I work a lot with gardeners, and they all use the verb "sembrar" to refer to any kind of planting - even for transplanting shrubs and trees.
