Yesterday I got an email from Emily Philips ([email protected]) saying that I was chosen for a full-time or freelance translation position. As per the attached Employment terms I had to pay USD 30 just be registered in their database. Such a strange requirement was explained as a need to make sure I am a real translator and was really chosen by a PM. If I got an email from the PM why do I have to pay something to confirm that? PERSONA QUE INICIÓ LA HEBRA
Definitely a scam Aug 19, 2015

How can this not be a scam if 1) she has a Gmail account 2) the link she asks to use for this "security payment" is getting blocked by Google is a phishing one 3) this is ridiculous to ask for USD30 from a person you have chosen youself. Even PayPal asks for USD 1 to verify your identity. 4) if they want to make sure only right people are registered, then let the managers register new linguists internally as every normal translation company does. Passwords and security credentials were invented ... See more

Passwords and security credentials were invented long ago. 5) this "hurry up and don't miss your chance" thing - have you nitced that? You have 2 days to register. Kidding?

The most funny thing about this all - she is still writing to me!

I received this email too. Aug 19, 2015

Following this email, I emailed them via their website, using their "contact" address.

The sender's email address is a gmail one ([email protected]) so it doesn't look like a business email.

I have doubts about this employment contract.

A scam Aug 19, 2015

The red flag is waving wildly whenever someone has "chosen" you for anything, yet simultaneously asks you to pay a fee to register.

Well, either you were chosen or you have to pay in order to be considered for the position. Can it get any more contradictive? Resolution: File 13 (trash it and block the sender).

It's the record in Proz BlueBoard Aug 19, 2015

But, when I check on it, I was surprised to find it on Proz Blueboard.

How hard is it to put Apex in a gmail address? Aug 19, 2015

Sorry, but the naivity of some members here just gets to me sometimes. You can write microsoft in a free (!) gmail address - that does not actually make you Microsoft, right? They are not Apex. They are scammers. They lied. Trash it and move on.

Company in US but registry portal in West Africa? Aug 19, 2015

I got the same email too. Too good to be true and the $30 deposit was suspicious.

Checked the .ga domain of the portal links and it corresponds to Gabon, a country in West Africa.

Emily, come on, isn´t your company in North Carolina?

Spam Aug 19, 2015

I got the email too. It is definitely a spam and I have informed Apex about it. I think Proz should be more watchful with who posts job offers.
