Squashing: what should be squashed? How?

I\'ve noticed more and more people mentioning that they\'ve seen or had KudoZ questions squashed. How do you squash? How do you decide what can and what shouldn\'t be squashed?

Thanks,

Erika

There are specific instructions on that Jan 23, 2002

The ProZ memebers who can squash [administrators] receive specific instructions on when and why to squash.

Personally, I have seldom squashed questions, and when I have, I have always kept to the rules.

Regards,

BSD

Reasons for squashing: Jan 23, 2002

Reason for Squashing, as suggested by ProZ:

If the question:

1)Is offensive (sexist, racist, etc.)

2)Is of an adult nature and/or is profane

3)Is unprofessional and lacks both literary and technical merit

4)Is nonsense

5)Repetition

6)Other (specify):

Not really, Bertha Jan 23, 2002

I am assured that you need 500 Kudoz to squash. And in fact, I (and other people) have had questions squashed by one member who holds no position within Proz. In fact, she has been personally warned several times by Henry about her behaviour (and believe me, he doesn\'t do that lightly).

My only offence, and that of the other members, was to point out

My only offence, and that of the other members, was to point out

(a) that certain answers were wrong/non-idiomatic, and were provided by people (mainly her) who had no business to give them as they had no native-speaker knowledge,

(b) that her response to corrections was extremely rude and inflammatory.

She squashed a question where my answer was widely supported, and gave as a reason that my answer was old-fashioned. The answer was into English. I am a translator working into English, living in England. She has no native-level English, and does not live in England. Thus, her behaviour was not just unprofessional: it was childish and absurd. Henry has declined to remove the squashing.

Squashing Jan 23, 2002

Hi Bertha,

So I assume that not anyone can squash an answer. Thanks for the reply!

Only if you have 500 KudoZ Jan 23, 2002

Hi Erika,

You need 500 KudoZ to be able to squash.

Cheers,

Andrea

Squashing should take place with utmost care.

A person posting a question is in NEED and who are we to judge?

The right of free speech also entails the right to put a question without being silenced.

Squashing is the electronic form of book burning. Jan 24, 2002

Dear Erica and Bertha,

Squashing is the electronic form of book burning.

Squashing is inherently evil and should be forbidden.

Free Speech is a Human Right!

May it one day reach ProZ!

Sven.

Yes, Sve, but does it give askers unlimited freedom to offend without any sanctions? Jan 24, 2002

I am against squashing. But we shouldn\'t answer rude askers: \'What is XYZ, dammit?\' merits no reply, even if some members are so desperate for points they still answer. As they answered the recent diatribe, posed in the guise of a Kudoz question, urging us all to lower our prices to $ 0.00000001 per word. How sad can you get?

Are 500 kudoZ points enough anymore? Jan 24, 2002

As more and more people join and stay with proZ, the amount of people (some of whom are unscrupulous) able to squash rises. Maybe Henry and Jason could consider upping the magic number on a yearly basis - say 500 points a year (not that difficult to earn).

Upping requirements sounds like a good idea Jan 24, 2002

I think this is a good idea, not so much because of the KudoZ themselves but because they mean involvement with the site. Some people may have earned their KudoZ a while ago and not be aware of policy changes or other relevant issues.
