I am translating more and more and I would like to get a translation program (like trados or others). Right now I cannot invest money on that. Is there any good program for free or that is cheap, but good?

Wordfast anywhere online, free and versatile.

ForeignDesk Oct 27, 2010

Hi Esther, hi Paolo,

I would google for ForeignDesk, an Open Source solution (or GNU license?) released many years ago which contains all elements of a commercial CAT tool:

- Termbase interface (very good)
- Translation interface with the Termbase window
- Fuzzy Matches
- Other more or less useful tools

I don't know if you still can download it, but in any case it's worthwile to give it a try.

By using it, you will get the feel to use commercial tools in the future, as the handling is very similar.

Good work and greets,
Mike

is still around and has not been mentioned yet.
Also, the time limited free demo versions of the commercial products are worth a peep.

This is supposed to work like Wordfast Classic, so it's compatible with Macs and PCs: http://anaphraseus.sourceforge.net/ .

If online translation is your thing, also take a look at Boltran (which is based on OmegaT and works in pretty much the same way). It works fine for ODT and DOCX (and similar) files, but is a bit buggy with plain text files (encoding issues) and possibly with HTML files (encoding issues).

Across or Wordfast classic Oct 28, 2010

People complain about Across being hard to install, but if you have a very strong computer it should work fine. It's actually a great program and offers you pretty much anything you need.

However, if your computer isn't that great, I'd probably recommend you start with Wordfast classic, particularly if you are new to CAT tools. It's not free, but you should be able to find a cheap second hand copy somewhere. You could also try Wordfast anywhere, but I can't say I have really been co

You could also try Wordfast anywhere, but I can't say I have really been convinced by any of the online, so-called "cloud" CATs yet.

Be careful with OmegaT if you work mainly with complex formatted Word documents.

Michael

p.s. I use only memoQ these days.

p.p.s. As Adrian mentions below: Across has GREAT customer support service, and their Help manual is one other companies could learn a thing or two from.

Yes, if you have a powerful machine, Across is a very good and free choice for a starter in the world of CATs.

Just be aware of two things:
1) To use Across for your own projects (not just for online projects prepared for you by a PM in a translation agency), Across will install MS SQLite server on your computer. This may possibly slow your machine down considerably.

2) The free SQLite database size is limited to 3 GB of data. Once you have exceeded this limit, yo

I would also recommend Across. I find it very intuitive, so it is easy to start working with it even if it is your first approach to CAT-Tools.

And the customer support service saved my life once.. Quick and efficient, very German

There's one good program: MT2007

http://mt2007-cat.ru/Eng/index.html

It's very easy to use and it's very stable and reliable. You can be sure that if you translated a document, you will be able to export it! Besides, it's very light and it does not burden your computer performance!
