Why a need for glamour? Don't you guys already find that when you enter a room and people realise what you do for a living, the time quickly comes when strong men go very pale in the face and beautiful women go weak at the knees? Seriously though, I would welcome any steps taken by the media to explain to the public at large (and decision-makers in industry and commerce in particular) why ours is a highly demanding and exacting profession that plays a key role in society.

How about a conference translator? Jun 15, 2007

Conference translators (I'm not talking about interpreters!) actually do live a pretty exciting life. There is an association devoted exclusively to conference translators: the Association internationale des traducteurs de conférence (AITC - www.aitc.ch).

Conference translators (I'm not talking about interpreters!) actually do live a pretty exciting life. There is an association devoted exclusively to conference translators: the Association internationale des traducteurs de conférence (AITC - www.aitc.ch).

In my youth I traveled to conferences in at least 15 different countries. I got evacuated because of a revolution, was in a plane that had to make an emergency landing in a jungle, nearly died of zorroche in Cuzco, had to deliver a package to the recent former president of Ecuador in his hotel room (he was wearing nothing but boxer shorts) - not to mention side trips to an endless variety of fascinating places. There could be intrigue around heads of state, etc., etc. I remember kidding around with a young fellow at the hotel pool. We sat at a table and ordered drinks, and it turned out that he was the Minister of Economy of Chile - when my eyes got big, he laughed and said "We have a help shortage in my country."

I see the potential for a very exciting show! ▲ Collapse

Two questions:
1. What does a conference translator do, exactly?
2. What's zorroche?

You just made the job description so much more appealing, should I need to hire staff.

Come to think of it, there's enough material in one Powwow to fill a whole season, so I guess I would have voted "yes".
