Although the Rosetta Stone was a miraculous discovery and Champolleon's work deciphering it was brilliant, I wonder whether anyone has considered whether it demonstrated a GOOD translation !! Did anyone proofread it? (I'm only joking, and would insert one of those funny faces if I knew how).
Another idea occurs to me.
Did you know that we translators have a patron saint?
He is St Jerome, born in Dalmatia circa 340 AD, died in Bethlehem 420 AD. He produced the first translation of the Bible into Latin.
Perhaps he should be our symbol?

A client has rung me 5-6 times with two extra lines/words/comments on a job I finished last week.
"Oh, yes, it was super," she says, "but I just thought...." Then she explains for 10 minutes where she has changed the source text. Or maybe not. The printer is waiting.
Note to myself: Put the rate up at least 50% next time that client sends me a job...
I've been away for two days.

Three family members can't wait until this evening 'just to hear how I am.' You'd think I'd been away for a month, or ill or something. I was in town on a day-course.
And a good client sent me a new job with 128 (yes, really, 128) files in it!!!
Mercifully 5 were a Trados TM, 1 contained the general instructions, one was a file for translation, 1 was a word count... and the other 120 were PDFs and JPEGs with pretty pictures for reference. Still, I really thought he had gone mad this time.
I'm going for a walk to the post office, then I can start looking through my in-tray!
I like the parrot too, as long as it keeps quiet. The birds in my Dutch friend's garden imitate her mobile phone. I'd shoot them, I really would!
