Not sure Sep 27, 2022

I started translating many moons ago, so I've had a long time to improve the way I work, but probably not in the last 6 months…

Just a minor point, I've switched from doing all my bills on the last day of the month (er... often that gets put off till some point in the first few days of the next) to billing direct clients almost immediately after delivery. They seem to prefer this, and I get paid much more quickly too for some reason.

Simplified everything non-translation Sep 27, 2022

I've gone from limited company to self-employed and from overcomplex accounting software to homemade Excel sheets, and the minuscule time savings have made me so happy I'm now busy creating some macros in Word as well.

Yes Sep 27, 2022

It just so happens that twice this month I declined 2 jobs that I knew were going to be a hassle and underpaid in relation to the amount of hours that were allocated.

Last time I did similar jobs I swore that this would be the last time, however difficult it is to let some of your best clients down.
This time I declined and feel good about it. Saving myself from a lot of stress.

I'm quite happy with my current modus operandi, and so are my clients, so I don't feel the need to make "improvements".

Well ... that's a good approach ... IF you can afford to lose some clients or work Sep 27, 2022

Everyone would like to do only the jobs that are most worthwhile. If you're really busy, of course, you can afford to do only what you want to. If you are not, you have to take what you can get :/ I have been in both situations, many times

Billing platform Sep 27, 2022

Well, it was over 6 months ago, but I have a billing platform (a company) generate, send and keep track of all my bills, and file my quarterly tax returns. OMG ... it's so worth it, I can't believe I didn't start using it earlier.

Continuous, tiny gains Sep 27, 2022

I find small areas of inefficiency or inconvenience and work them out. Every week I find a rough edge or two that I can smooth away. The contribution made by each is very small, but then again so is the investment in time required to implement the solution. Over a year, the savings add up to something significant.

One has to be careful not to end up shaving yaks, but this approach works for me. What seems to be key is using patches of spare time to create solutions that save time when you're actually busy, such as when trying to hit a deadline.

I made some improvements in how I do business by diversifying Oct 3, 2022

I no longer solely depend on translation for my income and took up a sideline job, since then my financial situation has greatly improved. So, yes.
