Facebook es la plataforma líder en redirigir a los lectores hacia contenidos informativos desde mediados de 2015, cuando superó en esto a Google. Más de 2.130 millones de personas forman parte de su comunidad. Hay 332 millones en Twitter. Dos tercios de los adultos norteamericanos (el 67%) declaran que se informan vía redes sociales, según un estudio de agosto de 2017 realizado por el Pew Research Centre.
El problema es el modelo de negocio. Así lo señala Emily Taylor. El usuario acepta ceder datos a cambio de un servicio gratuito. During the fervour of the Arab Spring, they transformed into a democratising force. They seemed to be a perfect tool for social change, empowering ordinary citizens.
“They gave a voice to those who didn’t have one,” stresses Emily Taylor, Executive at Oxford Information Labs, during a phone call from the UK. Her organisation has been working on Internet governance matters for fifteen years. “Everything has changed in just seven years. The political advertising campaigns designed to interfere with electoral processes are a cause for concern.”
Facebook has been the top platform in redirecting users to news content since mid-2015 when it surpassed Google in this respect. More than 2,130 million people are part of its community while Twitter has 332 million users. A study by the Pew Research Centre in August 2017 found that two-thirds of North American adults (67%) turn to social media networks for their news.
The problem is the business model, as Emily Taylor points out. Users accept to share their data in exchange for a free service. Algorithms use this information to identify users’ interests. Advertising companies then pay to receive this information. “It’s not just data from public posts which is gathered,” affirms Taylor, “but also data on the user’s location and from private messages.” The longer we spend on the platform, the more data it can collect. Some say, in a clear display of anthropological optimism, that people will gradually move away from social media, just as they did with junk food, choosing to devote their reading time to more discerning fare instead.
