I’m not an interpreter and I'm not good at foretelling the future but I’d risk saying that it’s a good solution when there are no local interpreters offering the language needed AND the costs involved are an issue (hospitals, courts…).

It will make a big difference in the way simultaneous interpreting is done. My comments will refer to simultaneous interpretation. As noted above, informal consecutive interpretation via telephone has existed for a long time and is not well regulated or well paid. For simultaneous, I can foresee several trends:

1. Where local interpreters are not available, the cost of hiring interpreters from out of town will be much lower (no need to pay travel and per diem), which will expand the market to include interpreters from anywhere in world, thus improving opportunities.

2. Where costs are lower, clients will be more interested in hiring interpreters.

3. Wider use of interpreters will create awareness that the service is available.

4. Standards will change: some clients will settle for lower quality, while others will still insist on experienced, fully bilingual professional interpreters.
