Lots of constant and sporadic noise:

- the sound of the heating
- the humming of the fans operating inside my PCs
- the sound of 100's of pages being printed from a huge document
- the tappity tap and clickety clack of the keyboard as I type away
- background music when I feel like it
- mewing and meowing from cats in heat in the neighborhood, and
- the occasional explosion of sound of me losing my cool and blowing a gasket

Otherwise,

Otherwise, very quiet. Very hunky dory.

Pretty quiet ... Dec 10, 2017

... but at the moment there's a near-gale blowing and I can hear the trees opposite creaking and swishing about, and the washing-machine gurgling away in the kitchen.

A bit noisy but all right Dec 10, 2017

I hear some noise coming from a belt highway only 150 m from my house.
Normally, that does not bother me, in fact, it adds some life.
However, when doing voice-overs it's a nuisance.

Total silence, but depending on the outside Dec 10, 2017

I live in a house and my peace and quiet depends very much on what happens outside in a daily basis. But in general, the environment inside my house is very pleasant to work and everything else.

I like to have the radio on in the background most of the time. Right now, Bob Dylan singig "Tangled Up in Blue" on BBC 6 music. It's on a PC in the other room, so it's just loud enough to be audible in the background without interfering with my speech recognition software.

Generally quiet Dec 10, 2017

Now that my neighbor has finished a long and noisy project, I can hear just the rumbling of airplanes above my house approaching the airport and the occasional siren of an ambulance not able to get through the traffic. I like to have my TV on in the background.

Radio running in the background and the occasional airplane landing in our back garden (which I generally do not notice), other than that, pretty much quiet in my cellar office☺

More or less silent Dec 10, 2017

I even have a PC with no fans in it, 'cos the fans in its predecessor annoyed me. Yesterday I heard an intermittent rhythmical sound that I couldn't identify at first. It turned out to be a pheasant in the back yard.

When I was younger I was convinced I worked better with music on. It was probably not the case then and it certainly isn't the case now. I find it really distracting.

However, I can work really well in stations and airports, in places where there is a lot of hustly and bustle going on around me, as long as none of it concerns me. It generally means I have to put an alarm alert on by screen, otherwise I might miss the train/plane.

Peace and quiet Dec 10, 2017

Beside the humming of the computer fan and the clicking, it's silent and perfect!
I used to work as an in-house translator and some genius thought it would be a good idea to sit the translators near the kitchen and the exit. It was pure hell for a couple of years. Then I quit and became a freelancer. Now, I can enjoy the silence!

Generally quiet Dec 10, 2017

Generally quiet except for Mondays (garbage pick-up day) and in the summertime when the grass is cut, usually at the exact moment when I had planned to go sit outside for a while.

all sorts of noise! Dec 10, 2017

Since loneliness is my bugbear as a freelancer, I moved out of my office and into the kitchen. Since loneliness is my bugbear as a freelancer, I moved out of my office and into the kitchen. My laptop is at the end of the bar, away from the stove, and I can see all other inhabitants of the house as they stumble down for their first coffee, and all subsequent comings and goings too since our front door leads directly into the kitchen.

So there's often a fair bit of noise, although I won't be doing any serious work while people are coming and going. If I'm on something urgent at a time when everyone's in and out, I'll hide in the office. Mostly I'll be doing the draft for something easy like a fashion catalogue.

Once everyone's left, the cat will make sure I know she's there, yowling for her food and purring either on my lap or on the cushion on top of the radiator.

Sometimes, when doing simple stuff I don't need to think too hard about, I might put some music on. Although that often ends with me singing along and forgetting about my work.

The house next door but one is being seriously renovated, seems they're rebuilding the entire thing except the façade, so I can often hear machines and workers shouting.

In the summer, doors and windows open, I often hear my seriously talented musician neighbours practising, which is pure and utter delight.
