I don't use or participate in social media at all! | | | Social media - Adistraction | May 13, 2017 |
I do not use social media at all as it drains all your time.
Regards,
Devanathan. | | | Yes - at least they used | May 13, 2017 |
I used to be active on Facebook and LinkedIn, but I found them such a huge distraction that I rarely participate anymore.

Twitter addict. I'm glad the French presidential elections are over. But I realised I have to slow down because in the end, social media are only useful for events (Facebook) or news (Twitter) | | | DZiW (X) Ucrania inglés al ruso + ...
No use.
Personal contacts only, if required.
Some naively believe that a social account promotes or guarantees a thing, but it's just another tool for at best annoyers, but mostly spammers, bots, fraudsters, and ID thieves. There should be a big reason to deliberately make biz even riskier.
I am glad to see that 17% of fellow translators do not participate in social media. I believe that the bubble of social media has to burst before we, humans, can make it useful. Almost any of the modern social networks looks and smells more like a trash bin to me - and it is a pity, because the idea itself has a great potential that has unfortunately been nullified by the big players in this field who are apparently more interested in $ (or Euro, or keeping their shares of the market and their u... I kind of miss old-fashioned message boards - they were much more informative and rewarding when they were still able to attract a big share of Internet users. ▲ Collapse | | | Mario Freitas Brasil Local time: 05:18 Miembro 2014 inglés al portugués + ... Not only while working | May 13, 2017 |
Social media is the worst type of distraction in the world these days, not only while working.
You see people walking down the streets or driving (!) looking down at their mobiles. If a lion escapes from the zoo and starts attacking people, the social media users will be the first victims, as they will only see the lion when it's already on top of them.

I'm sick and tired of answering people and realizing they are not listening, because they are typing on the stupid social media. It's an amazing waste of time. I have examples of people being negativelty affected by these things even in my home. They miss deadlines in school, they don't hear important things we're saying because they are paying attention to a stupid joke in Instagram. You make a serious comment, and all of a sudden the person starts laughing, then you realize what's going on.
You see the kids in school during break all sitting down and looking down at their mobiles, instead of socializing. Even in parties, shows, movie theaters... it's all the same. People do nothing else, no real socializing, only media networking. What a very poor world we are living in.
In my life, the social media are allowed quotas: Facebook - 15 minutes per day. Linked-in - 15 minutes per week. All others: ZERO. ▲ Collapse

Social media for a freelance translator are absolutely both helpful and distractive.
I am benefitting a lot from LinkedIn and I get a lot of distraction from Facebook. Yet, I try to manage all the distraction by limiting my log in to 1/2 times a day for max 15/20 minutes.
My general conclusion is, however, being social and staying connected is much more advantageous.

I believe "social" media is a contradiction itself. It is anti-social actually.
But I'm getting old. Maybe I'm the problem.
And as an old guy, I don't use it at all. | | | Vanda Nissen Australia Local time: 18:18 Miembro 2008 inglés al ruso + ... Right now, yes | May 14, 2017 |
Recenlty I've been spending quite a lot of time promoting the FIT Congress on social media, Facebook and Twitter. While I am not a Twitter addict, I am subscribed to several groups on Facebook and of course, each time I do something Congress related, I can't stop myself from reading new posts or friends' updates. I will really need to stop it in August. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Do you find social media a distraction while working?
