It has deteriorated slightly Jan 17, 2017

But in the meantime 25 years have gone by, and now I'm almost 48 years old. So I'm not sure it has anything to do with translating!

But only because I had a cataract removed! Apparently, years of living in sunny countries made it grow more quickly, so it wasn't the translating!

I’ve been wearing glasses since my early 40s and over the years my eyesight has deteriorated slightly. Would I also wear glasses if I had a different profession? Very probably as I’m getting old…

In which sense, eyesight or of the everything☺

My eyesight is just as good as when I was a child (touch wood). Amost all of my family have had to get glasses over the years so I am considering myself lucky at present.

As for the other vision .....

But only because I had cataracts replaced.

The most eyestrain I've experienced is trying to read some of the PDFs that come across my desk.

For a linguistics project in graduate school, I once read all the lead entries (not the definitions) in an unabridged dictionary using strong glasses. I was about 40 years old, and that experience did affect my eyesight.

Deteriorated slightly, but nothing to do with translation Jan 17, 2017

I was nearly 50 when I started translating professionally, and at that time I could proofread without glasses.

I began having trouble distinguishing commas from full stops, so I started using reading glasses for work. It is a natural process. I am long sighted, and can still count the leaves on a tree or the tiles on the neighbour's roof at a distance of 30 meters... But without my glasses, my arms are just not long enough to hold a book where I can see to read it!

When I was 13, I remember spending an afternoon at my aunt's and trying to take a bus in the evening to go home. I ended up having to go back to her place because I couldn't read the bus signs at all.

I started translating around 7 years later and my vision has certainly deteriorated slightly since then, but it was never good to begin with.

Quite!

I'm over 40 now so my eyesight has changed, but it's nothing to do with work.
As for the other vision, it's also remained unchanged!

Yes, still thinking of what other ending to give to Ashes, Ashes by René Barjavel and I must have been 12 or 13 when I read it.

In 17 years... Jan 17, 2017

I don't need reading glassed yet, but I can no longer use my -1,25 myopia glasses for reading or computer work, but have to take them off.
I'm considering getting "computer glasses" especially tailored for the distance between my eyes and the computer screen.

I see an opportunity here, though, for a series of follow-up polls: since I started translating, my ass has...; since I started translating, my wrinkles have..., since I s

But that has more to do with the two cataract operations.
