Simply because I am a translator and PMs don't translate.

Why would I?

Like Michael I am very happy with how things have turned out - even though they could be better, as is always the case.
It would also involve a huge decrease in income. Ouch!

However, so saying, I would love to take an M.A. course and concurrently teach J>E technical translation at college level, preferably at SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies), London University if I was individually wealthy enough as a payback gesture to my old colle

This is Friday and I'm feeling nice!

When I worked in-house I got to know what their jobs involved.
I'm simply not the type.

Some of the best project managers would not want my job either!

It takes all sorts to make a good team.

I used to Jan 17, 2014

In the beginning, since in Finland it often involves actual translation work as well, but at this point it would be pointless because the salaries are really bad and I don't have an employee mindset anymore.

More money but more stress Jan 17, 2014

We used to farm some work out to a select few talented translators in our language combinations, and even that was a complete nightmare, so no thanks

Thank you, but no, thank you. Jan 17, 2014

The last 7 years of my employment as an in-house translator were spent being not only a translator but also a project manager. It was a good and helpful experience...then.

Knowing what such a position involves and being no longer employment-orientated, I will definately pass.

I love translating: I love playing with the written word, reading words in a foreign language, magically turning them into English, and then arranging them on a page to find the best possible solution to the translation enigma.

On the other hand, as far as I am aware, project management involves organising people, constant telephone calls, an endless stream of emails and high stress levels. Definitely not my idea of fun!

Thanks Jan 17, 2014

Thank you for these opinions - and I daresay more will come. They echo many of my natural instincts, but are also informative, since I have not lived in the project manager's world.

I did Jan 17, 2014

Yes, I worked as a PM for a year, although it also involved translation. It was pretty intense and I learned so much. I am now a freelancer and that experience was really helpful because I know how PMs think and what they look for. But for now, I wouldn't take it again, as I prefer focusing on translation and proofreading exclusively.

Changing from translator to project manager and freelancer to salaried employee?
Never mind not in the same ball park, not even the same sport.

The thought has never even crossed my mind. In life, I seek to manage as little as possible. That is the beautiful thing about translating. I may have to manage the money aspect and coordinate project deliveries, but that is about it. I want to live life doing and not managing, and so far I have been successful at this endeavor.
