In terms of work volumes, this has been a very unbalanced year. Following several years of falling work volumes, 2013 came in with a bang and I was overwhelmed with work for most of the time up until early August, when I decided to take a few weeks out. Since resuming work at the end of August, things have been dead. For me, September and October were virtually lost months.

The only thing that is different from Tim's case is that maybe I was not that overwhelmed with work the previous months but work volumes were certainly increasing this year.

I could have taken off 4 months this year easily, it was so quiet in the above 4 months. Was very busy the rest of the time, though.

None of the months this year have been slow enough to enable me to escape for more than a few days at a time. Even in the quietest periods I've usually got something to keep me ticking over.

Is there a pattern emerging?

As of August, I had had the most work of any year in my 20-plus years of freelancing.

In August I enrolled in an intensive course (30 hours of class and study a week, needed to complete my certificate in landscape design), so I told my clients I could only accept jobs < 5,000 words. I've accepted a few and turned down more than I accepted, but even if I had accepted all of them, the volume was lower than I was used to.

I've accepted a few and turned down more than I accepted, but even if I had accepted all of them, the volume was lower than I was used to.

Last week I received a generic letter from my best client addressed to all freelance translators apologizing for a slowdown, due to organizational changes, and noting that the volume is expected to pick up in a few months. It was a reminder not to put too many eggs in one basket because even the most stable institutions go through changes.

Nothing seasonal here. This was because I said farewell to a monster customer -- good riddance.

And, I started a big project two weeks ago that'll keep me busy -- and in clover -- until the end of January and beyond. Yessss!

Since the beginning of this month, though, I'm getting more work than I can handle!

And quite a few of my clients, both agencies and direct clients said they'd also been extremely quiet then too.

Like others, I never had more than a couple of days without anything, but it was definitely much quieter than usual.

Fortunately it all seems to have picked up again now though!

Other = November Nov 6, 2013

The reason I'm having time to write on this forum post is because, alas, it is this sweet November (category Other), especially since yesterday afternoon, and it feels very uneasy.

Congratulations to all you smug posters and commiserations to the rest of us!
