We probably take a couple of separate weeks as actuall holidays, plus odd days here and there. I voted 16-23 but then wasn't sure whether that's working days or not!

Right now, 7 for certain (tickets already purchased, accommodation arranged, etc.).
There will probably be a few other days at some other point and if I’m truly lucky one or two of Spain’s famous puentes (4-day weekends).
Any more than that is out of the question.

My children break up on the 15th June, and don't go back to school til the 15th September. This'll be the first year that I'll be freelancing during the summer too, and there's only so many holiday clubs a kid can stand! We'll see how it goes! HEEEELLLLLLPPP!!

It's all relative really. It's also difficult when you're (the missus and me) both working different days and putting two kids through college, one after the other. And my daughter's still in Med School, which means six years of sacrifices for my lovely little girl.
Of course, if I could bill double for the same amount of work, I think I could wangle a few months of quality R&R during the ye... See more How about

I answered more than 30 because I think that's a fair estimate, but I don't really keep count. And I tend to work at weekends and on bank holidays which means it probably all evens out anyway.
Last year I took a 2-week holiday (to California) for the first time in about 10 years! This year I have booked a week away in July and another one in September. What tends to happen is that I burn out in the weeks leading up to a holiday trying to get everything done!

And ask babysitting their kids or just invite themselves to come to visit on Monday morning, because they have that day free. Or call you on Friday, somewhere between 3 and 4 pm (exactly when you have to deliver a project), because their weekend just started.
To answer the question, I don't know. It depends on many things and it is different every year.

Yep, same with the neighbours here.
When they ask me what I do, I just tell them that "I fiddle around with computers." I might as well be digging a hole to the center of the Earth and they wouldn't be bothered about it. 
They've stopped asking, which is fine with me since I like to keep myself to myself. The only time they see me is when I'm fiddling around in the garden - which looks as if I am on holiday or pretending to be Jules Verne.

Work hard, play hard!
I usually try to avoid Norwegian winters altogether. Thanks to the professional freedom of being a freelancer, I decide WHEN and WHERE I work. I usually spend a few months in Thailand every year. I find that I work very well there, but usually like to take off at least a full month, visiting my wife's family in northern Thailand, and relaxing on the beach in southern Thailand - Koh Phangan to be specific - my home away from home.

Varies a lot: ±70 days in 2007; 24 for the 1st semester this year. That means AWAY from the office or surroundings, computers shut off, but also comprises some Saturdays and Sundays.
Not all in one stretch and includes attending conferences.

What I find fascinating is that I have less time off now that I’m a freelancer than when I worked a conventional job, yet it feels like more. No more dragging myself through months of treachery with a view to that elusive holiday waiting way in the future as my only beacon of hope and then, when the anticipated holiday arrived, passing it with a gnawing angst, knowing only too well what awaited me on the other side. Loving what I do means that I don’t need as much time off now plus the bigge...
