If it is the weekend, then I definitely don't work.
If it is during the week, I try to make sure that I have finished by the time my fiancé gets home so that we can have a nice birthday lunch and evening...
Obviously, if there is an urgent job or a special request from a client, I have to be flexible but I gear myself towards time off on my birthday.

I wrote "it depends" because I may not have any work on and would not therefore invent some as some kind of yearly "I must work on my birthday"-type ritual. However, if I did have work on then I'd work no problem: The older I get the less I care about my birthday, I'm only 28 and it already means very little to me.
I much prefer celebrating the birthdays of others! I would never, for example, work on my son's birthday.

I only care about my own birthday in a minor sort of nostalgic way, but my own children's birthdays are really important and demand direct input - a present and a card will not suffice. It's always a concern and I always have to plan around these days as they can't be ignored or taken lightly. Actually, my two boys are still very young, so perhaps when they get older I'll feel differently about that.

Birthdays for my are like religious holidays. All working activity stops and I must celebrate them. It doesn't matter if it's mine, my husband's, my children's, or my parent's or sister's, etc.
I plan beforehand not to have any job assignment on such a day, or I try to work quick and finish a job the day before. On my birthday, I normally invite people over. We make everything at home, from beverages to sandwiches, pastries, cookies and the big cake. And we have to clean the house which is big, so it would be impossible for me to translate texts as well. My husband helps lots and we really enjoy it. He does something similar for his birthday.
The children's birthday requires a bigger planning, as we need to arrange games for the children, inflate balloons, think of the party favors, the piñata which I normally make myself, etc., etc. This year my oldest daughter invited 20 friends from her class so we made the party at a club with games and lots of space for them to run and play.
It's always fun when there's a birthday, and I really enjoy planning and arranging them with my best care and love ▲ Collapse

I am with you. Being forced to work on my birthday is one reason that I chose to turn freelance. There are so many days in which work could be done, but my birthday is mine.

I love to cook and prepare for my daughters' celebrations with all their frirends. On my own birthday (on which I work as usual) I like to dine out: I find that food tastes different if I don't have to do the dishes after we eat. Fortunately, my husband has grasped the situation perfectly.

I did this year, but I took the day afterwards off and had a long weekend!. Last year I didn't work on my birthday - I took the day off and spent it with my family. It just depends on what I (or other people!) have planned for that day.
I love Lucia's idea of having a tea-party on no particular date - just because!
