To be exact, it's not a combination of the above, since every project demands different tasks. If I'm using a CAT tool and am asked to deliver a cleaned file, that is the last thing I would do before delivery. If I'm not asked to clean, or if I wasn't asked to use a CAT tool, then proofreading would be my last task. But if I'm given numerous instructions regarding layout, that would be the last thing I would do, etc.

... to Find 'double spaces' + Replace with a 'single space', as I couldn't find a way of stopping Trados from adding double spaces at the end of each sentence as per English ortography.
But I chose 'A combination of the above' from the list, since tasks like proofreading, visual review, spell check and the like altogether precede the delivery. | | |

I follow the same methodology with every translation:
1. Start translating (While translating, I also try to keep an eye on formatting, spelling, etc. to save time later.)
2. When finished, I run MS Word spellchecker (I’m grateful for some things it finds and ignore plenty of others.)
3. Read over the document on paper. This is to check for coherency, spelling, etc.

The last thing I do is prepare the invoice but I'm jealous of those who send it with the job.
Standard procedure for the Italian agencies I work for is "we only accept invoices at the month end and we begin processing payments 60 days thereafter" (meaning a further 10 days wait typically). I don't really mind though, as long as they do what they promise.

This. I wish they would stop using double spaces in English... And I do this last because I always forget while proofreading/spell checking, but it's on my "send-off checklist" which I review before sending off a job.
Invoicing is done at the end of the month unless the client is entirely new. I gave up invoicing per job for regular clients a long time ago. Without a CAT tool, I run the spellchecker, save the file under another name, take off "Track Changes", accept all changes and then perform my final proofreading [at this point I may also review client's instructions, if there are any]. I always deliver "clean" and "unclean" files to my clients unless there are instructions to the contrary and I leave any comments [I'm a big comment-leaver... That's the one key reason that demotivates me from studying Italian for 2-3 more years to further me into translating level. From what you say, it seems that translating for Italian agencies is closer to being an interest-free lending bank than a translator.
Many agencies have very strict requirements for filenames, both on translations and invoices... otherwise the files may get lost in their system. Each one has their own rules.
So the last thing I do before sending a finished job is actually checking if I've fully complied with their - often crazy - file naming rules. Next, invoices are often required to be sent to a different e-mail address, and also may have their file naming rules.
Depending on the setup, if addresses are different, I send the translation first, and after the upload has finished, I send the invoice. If there is any automated cross-checking (I'd never know), the translation would set the "delivered" flag for the corresponding invoice, and not the other way around.
Sometimes these rules are lacking, or too complex. One large agency sent me a whole set of instructions on how to download the original and upload the translation on their FTP site. I uploaded the translation and the invoice two days before the deadline precisely as instructed. Two weeks later, the PM sent me an e-mail asking how was the job going, because accounting was questioning her about my invoice. I told her the translation had been sitting at their FTP site all this time. Only then she went looking for it. Poor end-client! | |

After proofreading, running the spell checker, cleaning files, and reviewing vocabulary consistency, I review the client's instructions about a million times (I'm always afraid I'll have missed something).
Then I check document layout one last time. I translate many MS Word files that have lots of different inserted objects (Visio diagrams, autoCAD drawings, images, Excel charts, etc.), and these have a tendency to do as they please as opposed to remaining where/how I want them to. ... Then I check document layout one last time. MS word has lots of these 'compatibility' issues. I once completed a huge project with dozens of autoCAD drawings, only to find that MS Word had replaced them with huge red crosses... That was the day I decided to stop complaining about backup procedures.
