español term

a la cuadra

español al inglés Técnico/Ingeniería Barcos, navegación, marítimo Navy, military
I am looking for "a la cuadra" as in a location out at sea opposite a point on land. For example "a la cuadra de la ciudad de xxxx." (Please note, the context has nothing to do with wind).

on the beam

This expression is not used in Spain, but from your description it sounds like "por el través" on the beam. That is, an object on land (or at sea) is, at a certain moment, at right angles to the vessel when on course.
Example sentence:

At 18.15, steering 085º we had Cabo de Creus on the beam

agree neilmac : I'd always wondered where (more commonly heard) "off the beam" came from :)
