Having now seen all the answers proposed, only one thought comes to mind: am I the only one who thinks that this whole \"PC thing\" has got completely out of hand. And if we translate as faithfully as possible what it says in the source language into the target language - avoiding anything known to be offensive - do we have the right to be even more politically correct than the original author?

Superdotados are called gifted and talented. Special needs children is more commonly used than learning difficulties, but this term includes children without learning problems, such as children with physical disabilities, behavioural problems, etc

Pienso que 'gifted' no tiene discusión. Últimamente se oye mucho 'challenged'; incluso para niños obesos he oido 'weight challenged'.

The logic behind using this phrase is that most children fall within the mainstream category but you have children on each side of the spectrum: both sides cannot cope with mainstream education. One group because it is too slow (i.e. the gifted children) and the other group because it is too fast (what in the age of political incorrectness were children that needed remedial work: they went to remedial classes). From a teacher\'s point of view both ends of the spectrum need special educational provisions.

In California GATE is a program dedicated to the children with special talents. These children go through a qualifying process. Once they are in the program, they are offered different extra classes during and after school and also on Saturdays. During Summer, usually they have summer camps and trainings in different abiliities.
